Formula 1: Lando Norris joins McLaren (for a second time)

As a dedicated F1 enthusiast with years of racing passion under my belt, I’ve witnessed some incredible moments, but Lando Norris‘ journey this season has truly left me awestruck! The young Briton’s meteoric rise from McLaren’s Young Driver Programme to contending for the world championship is a testament to his skill and determination.

In 2017, Lando Norris became part of McLaren’s Young Driver Programme, which eventually allowed him to take over from two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso at McLaren when Alonso retired for the first time following the 2018 season.

In the Miami Grand Prix held at Miami International Autodrome in May, Norris claimed his initial career win. This triumph, combined with McLaren’s improvement and Red Bull’s decline, unexpectedly propelled him into the running for the world championship title for much of the remaining season.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who won five races following the Miami Grand Prix, proved too formidable for Norris, but that didn’t stop Norris from enhancing his career record with victories at Zandvoort and Singapore, showcasing his dominance in those races.

On the final race of the year at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on a Sunday, he clinched his fourth victory for the season.

Now the 25-year-old Briton has joined McLaren in a different way.

Norris shares the 56th spot on the Formula 1 wins list with McLaren’s founder Bruce McLaren, Eddie Irvine, and Dan Gurney, all having won three races each. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr., who will transition to Williams in 2025, has already achieved four victories.

Instead of Norris who managed victories in consecutive years, McLaren secured his four triumphs across distinct seasons: 1959, 1960, 1962, and 1968.

Since my historic victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix back in 2018-2019, I’ve managed to clinch the world championship every season since then. Here’s to hoping this winning streak persists and I can claim another title in 2025!

2025 Formula One racing season starts on March 16th with the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit, and Sainz is the current champion of this race. However, Verstappen has been tipped as an early favorite for the world championship title in 2025, aiming to win his fifth consecutive championship. The upcoming season features a record-breaking 24 races, matching this year’s all-time single-season Grand Prix count.
