Formula 1: General Motors team set up to fail quickly?
As a veteran gamer of the high-stakes world of Formula 1, I’ve seen teams rise and fall like waves in the ocean. The news of General Motors entering F1 with Cadillac in 2026 has me both excited and wary.
Last month, General Motors surprised many by officially announcing their entrance into Formula 1 for the year 2026. This came as a shock because it had been thought that their opportunity had vanished entirely when Michael Andretti’s bid was turned down earlier in the year. Later on, he stepped down from his position as CEO of Andretti Global.
The upcoming 11th team in Formula 1, financed by General Motors and Cadillac, has announced their intention to join the competition after they pay a substantial $450 million fee to prevent the dilution of existing team values. This fee, which is over twice the minimum required at $200 million, will be divided among the existing 10 teams. Additionally, starting from 2026, the prize money will be distributed equally among 11 teams instead of 10.
For some time now, their Formula 1 team has been designing both a strategy and organizational setup, even before their official confirmation. They aim to keep pushing forward at full speed, working on their 2026 car in the year 2025. However, with only a year and three months left until the tentatively scheduled 2026 season, time is of the essence.
Several factors can be disastrous
Despite the anticipation surrounding the grid’s expansion once more, particularly with another U.S.-based team, there’s a growing apprehension about meeting the 2026 deadline. Creating a Formula 1 team from the ground up isn’t simple, and achieving success is an even greater challenge.
One major issue that’s causing some worry is the driver roster for the year 2026. While Cadillac currently has several options available, they don’t appear to be particularly promising. The potential drivers include a few from IndyCar, some F1 veterans who have lost their appeal in Formula 1, and a few drivers from Formula 2.
During the period when they appeared to protect their wealth using an anti-dilution provision, the cost limitation phase might bring challenges for the team. Picking drivers with limited skill may result in collisions and substantial repair costs, much like how Red Bull and Williams have had significant expenses this season.
In addition to the skill level of their drivers, the individuals chosen for various roles within the team are equally important to a team’s success. These individuals must make significant contributions for teams like Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes to maintain their leading positions over extended periods, as seen in Formula 1 racing.
Constructing a strong team for Cadillac might prove challenging, potentially leading to problems akin to those experienced by Haas at the start of their journey, such as neglecting to adequately tighten wheels during pit stops.
Another point of interest is whether Cadillac can successfully recruit top-tier talent, particularly in the area of vehicle development. They might entice some individuals with their substantial financial resources, given their reputation for deep pockets. However, apart from that, it seems the main incentive for someone to join Cadillac could be the prospect of a more prominent role and opportunities for advancement.
If Cadillac neglect essential elements, they might face significant challenges during their initial Formula 1 seasons. A series of disappointing seasons could lead them into a predicament reminiscent of Lotus’ struggle in the 2010s, lasting just four seasons on the grid. To avoid this, Cadillac needs to exercise caution when constructing their team, as their potential failure could significantly affect future plans for grid expansion over several years.
