Formula 1 could be heading to a new continent in 2028

As a lifelong Formula 1 enthusiast who has spent a considerable amount of time exploring the rich tapestry of African culture, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of Africa once again hosting a Grand Prix. Having had the privilege to traverse this magnificent continent and witness its vibrant spirit firsthand, I firmly believe that the return of F1 to Africa could be a transformative moment not just for motorsports, but for the continent as a whole.

Formula 1 racing hasn’t taken place on the African continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami Circuit. However, discussions about bringing it back have been growing more intense recently.

As an ardent follower, I was eagerly anticipating the potential return of the South African Grand Prix to the racing calendar in 2024. However, regrettably, discussions came to a halt last year when the nation’s position regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine became a stumbling block.

For quite some time now, Rwanda’s fascination with Formula 1 has been profound, and they are now ready to make an official entry into the racing calendar. A significant meeting is scheduled for the end of next month between Formula 1 authorities and Rwandan delegates, aimed at advancing discussions further in this direction.

Lewis Hamilton has been a big advocate

For many years, Lewis Hamilton has advocated for Formula 1’s comeback to Africa, and it seems his dream might soon be realized. Over the weekend at Zandvoort, the celebrated British racer was asked about a potential Grand Prix in Rwanda, and he thinks the moment is right for such a return.

During his summer vacation, the seven-time world champion had the opportunity to witness the local lifestyle in Africa.

According to his perspective, Hamilton believes that hosting a Grand Prix in Africa could flourish in multiple aspects. It has the potential to significantly stimulate the local economy, increase tourist inflow, and potentially draw global focus towards the critical concerns in nearby regions.

Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One Group, affirmed Rwanda’s intent and emphasized that any investment and strategic plan for a Grand Prix must meet their requirements. If everything falls into place, it’s possible the first race could take place in 2028.

Rwanda has previously shown an affinity for Formula 1 racing, as it will be hosting the FIA Annual General Assembly and Award Ceremony this December. The country’s eagerness to organize a Grand Prix is evident, and if successful, it would mark the return of the sport to Africa after more than three decades.
