Formula 1: Bizarre Carlos Sainz Jr. rumor puts Williams future in question

As a seasoned F1 enthusiast with decades of passion under my belt, I must admit that the potential swap between Carlos Sainz Jr. and Kimi Antonelli has piqued my interest. Having witnessed the twists and turns of the silly seasons past, I’ve learned to never say never in Formula 1.

2024’s Formula 1 off-season mainly centered around Carlos Sainz Jr. and Kimi Antonelli following Lewis Hamilton’s transfer from Mercedes to Ferrari being made official. It was decided late in the season that both drivers would have new teams for 2025, with Sainz moving to Williams and Antonelli taking over Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes.

The actions of both individuals raised doubts because of the teams they were planning to join. The announcement of Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari this year caused a stir in the Spaniard’s plans, as his choices for teams were not particularly appealing. Initially, there were rumors that he could join Red Bull, Mercedes, Alpine, Sauber, or Williams, but he took his time with negotiations and other teams secured their rosters, leaving Sainz with Williams as his only option. The 30-year-old found himself in a difficult situation due to this turn of events.

Regarding Antonelli, there have been doubts about his readiness for Formula 1 and his ability to maintain competitiveness with Mercedes. His performance in the Formula 2 league this season has been hard to judge due to the shortcomings in the racing car provided by Prema Racing.

An old rumor rejuvenated?

Speculations about Sainz potentially being replaced by Antonelli in 2025 had been robust a few months back, prior to the confirmation of both drivers’ moves. Nevertheless, Brazilian journalist Mariana Becker hinted recently that there might still be a chance for this swap, and it is rumored that the two teams held discussions before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It seems highly unlikely that either driver will change teams at this point, as they’ve both participated in post-season testing with their 2025 teams. Sainz’s recent actions at Ferrari suggest he’s fully committed to Williams and is putting all his efforts into the project presented by James Vowles.

The leader of the Williams team has openly acknowledged that their FW47 car won’t be competitive in the year 2025. This is primarily because of a series of accidents during the second half of the 2024 season, and the team’s strategic focus on preparations for 2026, when significant rule changes are expected to take place.

Moving from battling for the constructor title to aiming for points isn’t likely the change Alonso (Sainz) was hoping for. Conversely, stepping into Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes presents a significant challenge for Antonelli, and maintaining consistent performance to keep Mercedes competitive is an even greater feat.

Given the circumstances, it seems logical that a change would benefit both parties. Sainz could join a team where he has a chance to continue fighting for victories, while Antonelli could use Williams as an opportunity to hone his skills further. Although pre-season testing is approaching quickly, which might seem late for a driver switch, unexpected events have occurred in Formula 1 before, and this particular change should not be dismissed as impossible.
