Formula 1: 2025 driver lineup prediction (with one major reversal)

Formula 1: 2025 driver lineup prediction (with one major reversal)

As a seasoned F1 enthusiast with decades of racing under my belt (metaphorically speaking, of course), I must say the 2025 grid shaping up to be quite the spectacle! The upcoming season promises a blend of youth and experience, with newcomers like Gabriel Bortoleto joining veterans such as Fernando Alonso.

It has been verified that Sauber is planning to bring onboard Formula 2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto, who will take over from Valtteri Bottas in the Formula 1 team during the 2025 racing season.

Bortoleto’s long-term contract keeps him with the team until no later than the 2026 season. During this time, Audi will fully assume control of the team, and Formula 1 is expected to initiate a fresh phase of rule changes.

After the latest announcement, there’s now just one vacant spot left on the 2025 grid for Red Bull (RB), although further adjustments could still be possible. So, what might the 2025 grid shape up to be?

McLaren

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are slated to stay with their team for multiple seasons, as they have each signed extended agreements.

Ferrari

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that Charles Leclerc has signed a long-term contract, ensuring his continuity. On the flip side, it seems Lewis Hamilton is poised to step into Carlos Sainz Jr.’s shoes at Mercedes, marking the end of a remarkable 12-year chapter in their partnership.

Red Bull

In this scenario, potential upheaval might unfold. Max Verstappen is poised for a comeback, stirring speculation about him potentially taking Lewis Hamilton’s spot at Mercedes. However, it’s still possible that Sergio Perez could be let go, despite already having signed a contract extension lasting until 2026.

There’s chatter indicating that Liam Lawson, fresh from replacing Daniel Ricciardo at RB, might ascend to the role previously held by Sergio Perez. However, doubts linger regarding his preparedness for such a swift advancement.

If Williams wishes to retain Logan Sargeant’s seat by bringing in Franco Colapinto, it’s plausible that a deal might be struck between Red Bull and Williams, enabling Carlos Sainz Jr. to step in for Perez. Initially, Sainz was considered one of the top candidates to replace Perez; however, Perez renewed his contract, and Sainz ended up with Williams instead.

This could be a win-win-win for everybody but Perez.

Mercedes

George Russell is poised to come back, while Kimi Antonelli is expected to step into the role previously held by Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, who is now bound for Ferrari, following numerous rumors about the second Mercedes position over several months.

Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are both set to return to the team.

Alpine

Pierre Gasly will be coming back, while Esteban Ocon’s place as the regular driver for Alpine will reportedly be taken over by Jack Doohan, who currently serves as their reserve driver.

Haas

Kevin Magnussen is leaving Sauber, and Nico Hulkenberg has taken his place. Esteban Ocon will soon be joining the team from Alpine, with Oliver Bearman expected to join him following some strong performances at Ferrari and Haas this year.

RB

It’s announced that Yuki Tsunoda will be back soon, which strengthens the argument for keeping Liam Lawson with the team for another year instead of promoting him too quickly to the top squad. This sequence of events would also prevent Red Bull reserve driver Isack Hadjar from securing a seat in 2025.

Williams

For the upcoming season, Alex Albon’s position with the team remains secure. It might seem improbable that Williams would part ways with Carlos Sainz Jr., but there’s a strong interest in having Franco Colapinto in one of their seats next year. Reports suggest they’re demanding high compensation to let him race for another team. It wouldn’t be unexpected if they manage to retain him within their own ranks instead.

Sauber

Nico Hulkenberg was initially the primary focus for Sauber, and they managed to secure his services early on. More recently, they have also announced the signing of rookie Gabriel Bortoleto. Both drivers are bound by their contracts even after the Audi takeover is complete.

The upcoming 2025 Formula 1 season, featuring a total of 24 races, kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix, taking place at the Albert Park Circuit on Sunday, March 16th.
