Formula 1: 2024 Qatar sprint qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a seasoned Formula 1 enthusiast with over two decades of passion for the sport under my belt, I must say, the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix is shaping up to be an exhilarating spectacle! The sixth and final sprint race at Lusail International Circuit promises thrilling action, given its one-third length compared to the main event.

On the upcoming weekend, the last and sixth Formula 1 sprint race of the year 2024 is planned for this Saturday at Lusail International Circuit, preceding the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, which will be the 23rd race in a history-making 24-race season.

The upcoming sprint race on Saturday will consist of 19 laps, making it approximately one-third the length of a Grand Prix. This race takes place on a 16-turn, 3.343-mile (5.381-kilometer) road course situated in Lusail, Al Daayen, Qatar.

2021 saw the track get included on the Formula 1 calendar, but it didn’t have a race in 2022 because the FIFA World Cup was taking place in the hosting country at the usual race time. When it returned in 2023, it staged its debut sprint race, and that event was won by Oscar Piastri from McLaren.

In the race at Lusail, Piastri was the one to take the lead, as he started from the frontmost spot on the starting grid – the pole position. Interestingly, every single Formula 1 race victory at this track has been claimed by drivers who started from the first position on the grid (Lewis Hamilton in 2021 and Max Verstappen in 2023). No driver has ever won a race here from any other starting position.
