Formula 1: 2024 Belgian Grand Prix qualifying updates, full starting lineup
As a dedicated Formula 1 fan with years of racing passion under my belt, I can’t help but feel the thrill and anticipation building up for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The race is the penultimate event before the annual summer break in this record-breaking 24-race calendar.
The Belgian Grand Prix taking place on Sunday is the 14th competition in the extraordinary 2024 Formula 1 season, which comprises a total of 24 races. It represents the last event prior to the customary four-week vacation period.
At the 19-turn, 4.352-mile (7.004-kilometer) long Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, Belgium – the longest track on the Formula 1 calendar – the past four championship titles have been claimed by the race winners.
In 2020, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton claimed victory, whereas Max Verstappen of Red Bull has emerged triumphant each year following. In 2021, Verstappen secured his win primarily due to securing the pole position, as the race unfolded under safety car conditions in wet weather. Consequently, only half points were distributed.
In the past two seasons at Spa, Verstappen claimed victories after starting from the 14th and 6th positions on the grid. This is the lowest starting position for a race winner at this track in almost twenty years. No driver has gone on to win the entire Belgian Grand Prix from pole position since Hamilton’s victory in 2018.
Before Max Verstappen’s remarkable victory in the 2022 Formula 1 race at Spa, where he went from starting in 14th place to first position, making him the first driver since Bruce McLaren to achieve this feat, I have noticed an interesting trend. In six out of the last seven races held at Spa-Francorchamps, the drivers who started from pole position had emerged as champions. The seventh race was also won by a driver who started in the front row. However, Verstappen’s triumph from a double-digit starting spot broke this trend and left us all in awe.
