Formula 1: 2024 Baku qualifying updates, full starting lineup

As a seasoned Formula 1 enthusiast with years of racing under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and curiosity as we approach the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit this weekend. The tight circuit, which has seen only one pole-sitter win in the last five years, promises an exciting race filled with unpredictable twists and turns – just like life itself!

The final eight races of the unprecedentedly long 2024 Formula 1 calendar are upcoming, and the third of these events will kick off this weekend at the Baku City Circuit, hosting the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Last season, I was captivated by the thrilling 51-lap race held on the temporary street circuit of Azadliq Square, Baku, Azerbaijan, a stunning 20-turn, 3.73-mile (6.003-kilometer) track. Remarkably, this event was one of only three races that three-time reigning world champion and current front-runner Max Verstappen didn’t claim victory in during the 22-race season. However, the tables turned in 2023 as Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez emerged triumphant!

Currently, Verstappen is experiencing a six-race winless streak following an impressive start to the year where he won seven out of ten races, accumulating 27 wins in just 33 races. Since late June, however, he hasn’t managed to secure as many victories as he did during that 33-race period spanning from the 2022 season finale in Abu Dhabi up until this year’s race in Spain.

The 26-year-old Dutch racer, currently holding a 62-point advantage over Lando Norris from McLaren in the standings, hasn’t experienced a seven-race losing streak since 2020. At that time, he had already won nine Grands Prix and endured an 11-race losing spree. Now, he stands as the third most successful racer of all time with 61 Grand Prix victories to his name.

Although Baku City Circuit is known for its compact layout, it’s been five years since the victor of the race began from the front row. Valtteri Bottas secured pole position and won in 2019. Interestingly, Perez, who has twice emerged as the winner here, started in sixth gear in 2021 and 2023, while Verstappen lined up third in 2022. The race was absent from the schedule in 2020.
