Former Strictly star Camilla Sacre-Dallerup says chaperones for celebrity contestants are 'necessary' in the wake of show's misconduct scandal: 'Steps need to be taken'

As a seasoned journalist with years of experience under my belt, I’ve covered my fair share of controversial stories. But none have left me as shaken as the one involving professional dancer Graziano Di Prima and his alleged mistreatment of Zara McDermott on the set of Strictly Come Dancing.

Camilla Sacre-Dallerup, a previous contestant on Strictly, believes that chaperones might be required for celebrities participating in the show following the misconduct scandal. (Or: In response to Strictly’s misconduct scandal, Camilla Sacre-Dallerup suggests that having chaperones for celebrities could be an appropriate solution.)

Camilla, age 50, was among the initial group of expert dancers on Strictly Come Dancing from its debut in 2004 until the sixth season in 2008.

In the past few weeks, the show has been marked by confusion and disorder due to multiple investigations into abuse allegations and misconduct claims made by previous contestants.

Last year, Amanda Abbington stepped down from Strictly Come Dancing, explaining it was due to personal matters. Soon after, rumors emerged that she had requested access to her rehearsal videos and accused the program and Giovanni Pernice of causing her PTSD.

Last year, during the dance competition, I was unfortunately let go from the upcoming series due to allegations that I had used harsh words and inappropriate physical contact towards Zara McDermott.

As a lifestyle expert speaking on my experience, I believe that during Friday’s episode of Lorraine, I would express my thoughts on the proposed addition of chaperones for contestants in this way: “Considering the circumstances, it seems essential that we take these precautions. The introduction of chaperones could be a necessary step to ensure everyone’s wellbeing.”

She added: ‘In the time I was there everything was recorded.

If an incident occurred during a rehearsal, the producers would quickly contact you by phone. Subsequently, they would visit and discuss it with you in person.

Camilla noted that high hopes have been formed over time regarding the show’s excellence.

“She expressed that the previous season ended on a high note, so the following one should come close to matching that level of excitement.”

Based on my personal observation and experience, I’ve noticed that the weekly schedule for this show has undergone some significant changes lately. It used to air every 0.8 weeks but now it’s switched to 12 and 14 weeks instead. For me, as someone who’s been following this show closely, this shift has raised a red flag. I believe that the audience, including myself, anticipates a consistently excellent show each week. This change in schedule could potentially impact viewership and engagement levels. It might be due to various reasons such as production delays or creative decisions, but from my perspective, it’s important for the creators to consider the impact on their dedicated fanbase.

Camilla, originally from Denmark, has retired from dancing for the show and now dedicates her time as a life coach and hypnotherapist.

During an appearance on Lorraine last Thursday, I shared that I encountered some tension with my dance partner, Giovanni, right from the start of our rehearsals. On the third day, I felt compelled to express my concerns about him to the producers.

Amanda revealed that she expressed her concerns to the producer as early as the third day of the first week, sharing texts with him that read, “This is terrible, he hates me, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’m trying my best.” She described this occurrence as taking place during the initial week.

In her previous statements, the actress from “Sherlock” has characterized the rehearsal sessions she had with Giovanni as having a harmful or poisonous atmosphere.

For the past 32 years, I’ve had the privilege of entering rehearsal spaces. I believe I have a good grasp of what these spaces should feel and function like.

In the rehearsal room, it’s important for you to contribute with enthusiasm, empathy, and consideration. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel those qualities were reciprocated towards me, so I voiced my concern that something wasn’t quite right.

Asked whether there were further discussions at that stage, she said: ‘Many, many.’

Last year, Amanda and her partner appeared together on the show, but after only six weeks, she decided to leave. Since then, she has come forward with several accusations concerning her experience on the program.

Amanda expressed her disappointment by referring to the unexpected turn of events as “an anomaly.” She shared her feelings, stating, “I adore Strictly Come Dancing. This situation is merely an anomaly for me. I’ve always wanted to be a part of it. I believe it’s a precious British tradition cherished by many.”

When I was a child, watching Morecambe and Wise every Saturday night was a cherished tradition for me. The experience of tuning in each week to see Strictly feels the same way now. Most of the people on this show are remarkable, and I’ve formed valuable friendships with many of them. I don’t wish for it to conclude.

“I hope it continues to look stunning and provide enjoyable weekend nights out, but ultimately, its fate isn’t in my hands.”

As an obsessed fan, I couldn’t keep quiet any longer. With an ongoing BBC investigation underway, I felt it was my duty to use my voice. I didn’t want anyone else to feel silenced or scared, especially if they were being bullied, or if they found themselves in a challenging situation, or if their concerns weren’t being addressed. It was important for me to stand up and speak out, so others could do the same.

‘I do feel I have the right to say it was a toxic environment that I was in while I was rehearsing, because it was. I know what happened in the room, and it would be remiss of me if I was to just say ‘it’s fine, I don’t want to talk about it’.

Both women and men deserve safety and respect. Women should feel secure enough to speak out against inappropriate behavior when they encounter it, knowing that their concerns will be taken seriously. Men, too, are targets for bullying, so creating a safe environment where everyone can voice their concerns is essential.

I firmly believe that every woman should feel empowered to express herself freely, just as I would want the same for myself in any situation where I’ve been accused unjustly.

Based on Sunday’s news, Graziano is alleged to have pursued Zara McDermott while shouting offensive words, causing her such fear that she felt compelled to hide in a restroom and lock the door.

He’s expressed regret for having kicked his ex-partner, yet clarified that certain accusations don’t match up with his own recollections of the incident.

Based on recent disclosures, it is claimed that he used offensive language towards her, inquired about her weight gain, and acted aggressively. This left her feeling dejected and crying.

In her own words before, Zara acknowledged that there were specific occurrences within the training room that left her feeling very upset and distressed.

At that point in time, she chose not to disclose the occurrences due to fear of reprisal. It was ultimately the junior production team who spoke up instead.

A confidant shared with The Sun: “Zara rushed to the restroom, securing the door behind her. He followed suit, shouting offensive words. His demeanor was menacing as he hurled insults at her. The situation was alarming.”

Graziano could be heard shouting persistently in the background, but as soon as the production staff entered the room, his outbursts would cease. He’d exclaim, “What’s wrong with you people not getting this?” and “Is there really a need for us to be here?” His harsh words left Zara feeling disheartened.

The insider added that Graziano would apologise each time and ‘promise to not do it again.’

On Thursdays, Mark Borkowski, representing Graziano, informed BBC News: “Mark doesn’t approve of kicking, and he understands that it’s not acceptable.”

‘He knows he’s made a mistake. He apologised at the time.’

According to news articles, Mark mentioned: “However, he disputes some aspects of the situation as depicted in online comments. His recollections don’t match up with the descriptions found on the web.”

In my experience as a lifestyle expert, I’ve found that sometimes disconnecting from civilization can be incredibly beneficial for one’s well-being. I myself have taken similar steps in the past, with the full support of my loved ones. Graziano is making a brave choice by cutting himself off from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to focus on addressing his mental health issues.

Graziano believed the matter had been resolved at the time.

Based on what sources close to the production have shared, the tape of Graziano treating Zara unfairly compelled the decision to terminate his employment contract.

In a recent Instagram post, I expressed my deep regret over the circumstances that resulted in my departure from Strictly Come Dancing. My unwavering enthusiasm and commitment to winning may have influenced my approach to training. However, I recognize the importance of respecting the BBC’s HR procedures and believe that it is in the best interest of the show for me to move on.

He added: “Although some parts of this tale involve outside factors I’m currently unable to disclose, I stay determined to support my loved ones. Wishing only the best for Strictly and the BBC as they move forward.”

In wrapping up his post, he expressed gratitude to all those who have aided him in his professional and personal growth. He promised to reveal his experiences at an appropriate moment.

A BBC representative responded to TopMob, “We don’t discuss specific people or contribute to rumors.”

Based on my personal experiences and interactions with various individuals and organizations, I strongly believe in the importance of open communication. I’ve learned that active listening is key to building strong relationships and addressing concerns effectively. So, while we may have established procedures for handling issues brought to our attention, I want to emphasize that we value your voice and are always open to hearing what you have to say. Direct communication allows us to address any potential problems promptly and find solutions together. In my experience, this approach not only strengthens the bond between parties but also fosters trust and mutual respect.
