Former Project star makes shock return to the show after quitting three years ago
Peter Helliar was back on The Project on Tuesday night.
As a lifestyle expert, I had the pleasure of joining forces with familiar faces like Waleed Aly, Sam Taunton, Sarah Harris, and special guest star Kate Langbroek on a current affairs series in 2022 – yes, it was me who made headlines for stepping away from the show. It was an incredible experience working alongside these talented individuals, and I’m thrilled to have been part of the team, even if only for a short while.
Although viewers of the series delighted in Peter’s return to his anchoring spot, it was merely a visit on his part to publicize his latest publication, Detective Galileo, a children’s book.
Peter confessed that it felt somewhat peculiar to occupy a seat on the desk typically used for visitors.
He once sat on this side of the desk, but lately, he’s been switching sides a few times. Now, he finds himself back here. Jokingly, he said he’s engaged in a game of tennis… by himself!

Peter clarified that his sons, Liam, Oscar, and Aiden, are now 22, 20, and 16 years old respectively, which means they no longer fall under his intended readership for children’s literature.
‘I still sit at the edge of their bed and read to them’ he joked.
Although they don’t seem keen on listening to my ideas, they appreciate them and offer support. Instead of discussing it with my children, I prefer to connect with my own inner child.
It’s not the first time Peter has returned to the show since his departure.
Last year, he appeared on the desk alongside Michael Hing, Max Rushden and Sarah Harris.
Introduced as our globe-trotting friend, Pete Helliar, he took his seat! The experienced one was then discussed, revealing the reasons that drew him back to his familiar territory for a special guest spot.
Peter, who had been on a trip abroad for The Amazing Race Australia, playfully mentioned that he needed to return from Argentina since he hadn’t cast his vote for ‘Marsupial of the Year.’
The Wi-Fi signal was weak during my hike on the Inca Trail. By the way, I resemble a hairy-nosed wombat. And it seems they have a dance that can be lethal to humans.

I seamlessly dove into the program, sharing captivating tales and exchanging humor with the fresh faces as if we were long-time companions.
His fans were delighted, with several sharing their thoughts on social media.
One person wrote: ‘Fantastic! It seems you’ll be here on a permanent basis now!’ The other suggested: ‘Perhaps you could take on a more permanent role as the co-host.’
As a lifestyle expert, I recently disclosed the genuine motive behind my departure from The Project, as the wave of departures from the ailing Channel Ten program persists.
Four years back, the 49-year-old chose to step down from the show, citing the reason as the departure of his co-host, Carrie Bickmore, at that point in time.
He expressed that even though Carrie has stated she’s happy to depart from The Project, she continues to cherish it, and so does he. That’s true.
The project holds significant value for me as it has made a substantial impact on my life. I had the privilege of interviewing Luke Skywalker, and I am eagerly anticipating the future developments of the show.
Peter expressed his eagerness about exploring fresh territories, and he made it clear that he prefers not to be a creative professional who departs from gatherings for additional conferences.

Apart from sharing other details, he mentioned to Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa that his goal is to achieve both professional and personal growth in his life.
He mentioned that there are activities he desires to experience in his lifetime, not solely in a professional capacity, but also on a personal level. Furthermore, he has scheduled a visit to the London Ashes next year.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’ve spent more than a decade immersed in a single project, but that’s only half the story. Before that, I was a daily fixture on the set of Rove Live for an equally significant period.
The Project was rocked by two other high-profile exits in late 2022.
Lisa Wilkinson recently decided to step down effective immediately, while long-standing co-anchor Carrie had previously disclosed her intention to leave a month earlier.
Wilkinson stated, “I think I need to rearrange some aspects of my life,” as he joined hosts Hamish Macdonald and Laura Byrne.
After approximately 15 years on breakfast TV and an additional 5 years at The Project, I’m considering what the next phase of my life should look like, balancing both my professional and personal aspirations.
That October, Lisa’s fellow cast member, Bickmore, revealed her decision to leave The Project following a run of 12 years on the show.
Previously this year, Bickmore took a three-month break, spending time with her family in London, and then rejoined the panel in July. However, she resigned from her position in October.
