Former ‘Meet the Press’ moderator Chuck Todd exits NBC News
Chuck Todd, a staple of Washington coverage for NBC News since 2007, is leaving the network.
David Todd, the host of “Meet the Press” at NBC from 2009 until 2024, informed his team on Friday that he’s leaving to focus on personal ventures and new initiatives.
In 2007, Todd started working at NBC News, taking up the role of political director following his tenure as editor for the Hotline, a newsletter catering to Washington insiders. As one of the pioneering TV journalists, he began providing in-depth analysis on voting statistics, which have since become a staple in election broadcasts. In 2014, he succeeded David Gregory as the moderator for “Meet the Press”.
It wasn’t unexpected that Todd left, considering he relinquished his “Meet the Press” position in 2023 to allow Kristen Welker to take over as host.
It seemed Todd’s tenure at the network might not last long, as he openly criticized NBC News during an episode of “Meet the Press” in March for hiring former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel, which raised some eyebrows.
He claimed that NBC News frequently encountered “manipulation through psychological means” (gaslighting) and malicious character attacks while interacting with McDaniel during her time as RNC chair. He raised doubts about McDaniel’s ability to be considered a reliable source in a journalistic context now.
Todd’s remarks stirred an internal revolt that led to the network reversing its offer to McDaniel.

Despite the harsh nature often found on social media, Todd aspires to depart from the established public affairs program having improved it.
During my time as a devoted viewer, “Meet the Press” consistently stood out as the Sunday talk show I looked forward to most, thanks to Todd’s insightful moderation. However, as the first Trump presidency unfolded, Todd found himself in a contentious spotlight, becoming a figure of debate among many viewers.
Beyond his weekly responsibilities, Todd also hosted “Meet the Press Daily” on MSNBC. As MSNBC started attracting more politically liberal viewers, Todd frequently faced criticism from the network’s devoted followers due to his direct interview style.
At the same time Todd was branded “fake news” by President Trump and his acolytes on the right.
In a memo to his team, Todd recognized the challenging circumstances they were facing, accepting that such difficulties are part of the job.
In his farewell message, Todd expressed that if someone performs their job solely for popularity or activism, they may not be doing it properly.
