Former guitarist for metal band Possessed killed in police shooting

In a confrontation with law enforcement, Brian Montana, a previous guitarist for the Bay Area’s death metal band Possessed, tragically lost his life in South San Francisco.

On April 28th, an event took place following a dispute between Montana, aged 60, and a neighbor over fallen tree debris entering his property. This was detailed in a statement issued by the South San Francisco Police Department, which was initially published in the San Mateo Daily Journal.

At exactly 5:55 pm, officers arrived at the scene and promptly called for more backup since the armed suspect was now firing into an inhabited house. Later, he moved to a driveway of another property and hid himself among parked cars, continuing to carry his weapon.

Jillian Lauren, the spouse of Weezer’s bassist, Scott Shriner, was taken into custody under the allegation of attempting to take someone’s life. This action was initiated following reports that she shot at police officers while they were in pursuit of an individual suspected of fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run incident.

In the following quarter-hour, I found myself chronicling an unsettling scene where the suspect meticulously gathered three distinct firearms – a handgun, shotgun, and rifle. From various vantage points within the driveway, he returned fire towards officers, constantly shifting positions to find cover and concealment behind both vehicles parked there and the surrounding foliage.

In response to the incident, two law enforcement officials retaliated with gunfire, resulting in Montana’s death. A person inside the house that Montana had fired at sustained a minor injury during the gunfire and was transported to a nearby medical facility for care. Fortunately, neither of the officers were harmed.

District Attorney of San Mateo County, Steve Wagstaffe, informed the Daily Journal that “The shooter had consumed alcohol, and while his death is regrettable, it’s fortunate that no one else was harmed or suffered severe injuries in the incident.

For a period spanning from 1983 to 1984, Montana was part of an influential death metal group that paved the way for the genre. Recently, Possessed’s official Instagram shared a picture of Montana along with a heartfelt tribute.

I want everyone to understand that Brian Montana was an exceptionally kind person. He had a friendly demeanor and was always respectful, as I personally experienced during our early days with Possessed. The Brian I knew doesn’t match the portrayals I’m seeing online. It seems he was battling some difficulties, and now is not the time to speculate or judge him. Instead, let’s show compassion towards the Montana family and friends who are going through a difficult period. This tragic event may have more complexities, but it’s for Brian’s family to share or keep private. I still feel this loss deeply and am saddened by it.

Brian James composed “New Rose,” which was the initial punk single in the UK, and played a significant role in initiating both the hardcore and goth subcultures.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reflect on the heart-wrenching journey of Possessed’s frontman, Jeff Becerra. Back in 1989, an armed robbery left him paralyzed from the chest down. Despite this devastating incident, he’s been navigating life with unwavering resilience using a wheelchair as his primary means of mobility. However, something extraordinary happened in 2021 – for the first time in decades, Jeff took steps forward with the assistance of advanced robotic legs. It’s moments like these that truly embody the human spirit’s indomitable will to overcome adversity.
