Former Eminem employee charged in theft of dozens of unreleased songs

Previously employed by Eminem, an individual is currently facing accusations for leaking a collection of unpublished work by the renowned rapper.

46-year-old Joseph Strange was accused on Wednesday of committing copyright infringement and transporting stolen goods across state lines. The FBI reported that a group of Eminem fans had given Strange approximately $50,000 worth of Bitcoin in exchange for 25 previously unheard Eminem tracks (whose true creator is Marshall Mathers) in January. These songs were said to have been recorded by the rapper between 1999 and 2018.

In the Detroit area, FBI investigators found numerous tracks saved on hard drives within Strange’s home, as well as unpublished song lyrics and an unreleased music video. Strange, who was an audio engineer at Eminem’s recording studio called Effigy from 2007 to 2021, was the one who resided there.

In the spotlight, Gotti made a name for himself working as an A&R representative at Def Jam. It was during this time that he played significant roles in the signing and nurturing of iconic artists such as Jay-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck emphasized that it’s essential to secure intellectual property against unscrupulous individuals, as this measure helps preserve the unique rights of creators and shields their innovative work from being copied and exploited by people who aim to capitalize on the creative efforts of others for personal gain.

Amongst the staff, Joseph Strange was one of just four individuals who had secure password access to the material, as stated in the criminal complaint. The document further explained that Strange assisted in establishing and running the computer or hard drive system where Eminem’s music was created. This system does not have an internet connection, and only a limited number of people are granted access to it.

As a devoted movie buff, I’d rephrase it like this: “While scrolling through social media, I, as a longtime associate of music legends Eminem and Dr. Dre, found myself in an unexpected role – that of a detective. My team was on the hunt for those responsible for leaking our precious tracks. A dedicated fan reached out to me, sharing conversations they had with someone using the alias ‘Doja Rat’, who boasted about purchasing the tracks from Strange. Quite the twist, isn’t it?

Scarlett Burke, who is also recognized by her professional name, Mary Koons, has filed a lawsuit against Jared Gutstadt, the founder of Audio Up and Jingle Punks, claiming that he has committed sexual assault.

According to a statement made to the Detroit Free Press, Eminem’s representative expressed gratitude for the comprehensive probe conducted by the FBI’s Detroit office.

The extensive harm inflicted on Eminem’s artistic reputation and creative values by a trusted individual is undeniable, along with the substantial financial losses suffered by numerous artists and associates over the years who deserve safeguarding for their long-term contributions. We remain committed to taking all necessary actions to shield Eminem’s work and will relentlessly pursue this goal.
