Former Arkane Studios devs announce new retro sci-fi action RPG
As a long-time fan of Arkane Studios and their groundbreaking titles like Dishonored and Prey, hearing about Wolfeye Studios’ upcoming first-person action RPG felt like a breath of fresh air amidst the turbulence that the gaming industry has faced this year. The fact that Raphael Colantonio, co-founder of Wolfeye and the mastermind behind those beloved games, is at the helm only adds to my excitement.
Enthusiasts of games like “Dishonored” and “Prey” felt disappointed in May when it was announced that Arkane Austin, the studio behind these titles, along with Tango Gameworks (creators of “Hi-Fi Rush”) and Alpha Dog Studios (developers of “Mighty Doom”), were closed by Microsoft. Don’t worry, though, as Wolfeye Studios is eager to carry on the legacy with their upcoming first-person action RPG.
In 2019, Wolfeye Studios, founded by Raphael Colantonio (creator of Arkane Studios and co-developer of games like Dishonored and Prey), officially started work on the sequel to their 2022 isometric role-playing game Weird West. This new project is a first-person action RPG, set in a vintage sci-fi universe, and production has already begun in its early stages. The announcement was made public on Thursday.
In a recent press announcement, Colantonio shared exciting news: Our upcoming game is currently being developed and falls under the category of First-Person Action Role-Playing Games (RPG). For enthusiasts who have followed my past projects like Dishonored and Prey, or simply RPG fans in general, this new title promises a familiar and welcoming atmosphere.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve just caught a glimpse of the unnamed game from Wolfeye Studios that’s slated for a limited private alpha test next year. The visuals are strikingly reminiscent of the Dishonored and Prey universes, creating an atmosphere that leaves me intrigued. However, it’s still uncertain how these initial images will translate into the final look and gameplay of this upcoming masterpiece. The mystery only fuels my excitement as I dive deeper, forming my own theories about what this game might hold.
The pictures show workers working on an intricate steampunk machine adorned with detailed filigree designs and a menacing mask, perched above a gloomy canyon shrouded in fog. Additionally, there are multiple metal platforms constructed over the canyon’s mouth. A skeletal drone robot, resembling Dishonored 2’s Clockwork Soldiers but with twin shoulder-mounted gatling guns instead of arm-mounted swords, is also visible.
As a long-time fan of Arkane Austin and the immersive sim genre, I find it both exciting and heartening to hear about Wolfeye Studios’ current efforts to carry on Arkane Austin’s legacy. Having played many of their games over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the creativity and innovation that they brought to the table, and I am eagerly anticipating what they will produce next. The fact that they are seeking a publishing partner for their upcoming game, and that players can sign up for updates on the limited alpha test scheduled for next year, only serves to heighten my interest.
