For love, family, and redemption: VALORANT EGO music video explained

Agents should acknowledge and learn from their past errors. Check out the 5-year anniversary VALORANT music video starring Qing Madi as Mary Ade, performing the track “EGO”.

Madi carried out EGO in VALORANT’s fifth anniversary music video, which was intense and emotional. When a team member gets gravely hurt, the situation becomes intensely personal.

In the heat of a crucial operation, Killjoy sustains severe wounds, causing distress among team members: Brimstone, Raze, Phoenix, and Reyna. Pausing to collect their thoughts amidst the gravity of the situation, they reminisce about instances where personal pride blinded them, leading to the loss of someone dear. The movie additionally provides an impactful look into Phoenix’s past, showing how a blaze ignited by his abilities created a chasm between him and his sister, Mary.

After the group finds a secure spot, Sage miraculously shows up, assisting Killjoy and making an attempt to revive her. However, such a miracle doesn’t come for free. Her power to resurrect takes a significant toll on her, causing portions of her body to gradually harden, suggesting that she might be sacrificing some of her own strength. This poignant scene evokes the words of Omen in the game: “Sage, the life you bring back… do you ever ponder where it was taken from?

Under the title “Why We Fight“, each character embarks on a journey towards redemption. They battle for those they’ve tragically lost, with Killjoy and Raze fighting for “love”, Reyna and her sister for “family”. Phoenix and Mary are seeking “redemption”, while Brimstone and the fallen agent yearn for “recognition”. Lastly, Sage is fighting for “life”. VALORANT has hinted at these themes on their social media in relation to the upcoming track.

For those who played VALORANT

David Nottingham, VALORANT’s Creative Director, stated that the song, titled EGO, embodies the essence of our 2025 celebration. It symbolizes the balance between acknowledging those who have stayed loyal to us throughout the years and recognizing the emotional hardships endured by our agents, particularly Phoenix,” he added.

Anna Donlon, the Studio Head of VALORANT, mentioned that this anniversary serves as an opportunity for contemplation about “the chances, instances of introspection, and fresh hurdles” that gamers have introduced to the game during the last five years.

Jonny Altepeter, our Lead Music Supervisor, additionally offered some musical guidance: “Qing Madi proved an ideal fit for Mary Ade. Her raw version of ‘EGO’ perfectly encapsulated the emotional intensity we aimed to portray in this cinematic. It provided a robust base for more intricate storytelling within the VALORANT universe.
