For Lisa of Blackpink, ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 kicks off a pivotal year

Following relaxation on Hawaii’s sunny shores and sailing expeditions in Sicily, an illustrious group of actors has now journeyed to Thailand for a lavish, perilous getaway in “The White Lotus.” The third season of HBO’s dark comedy series, an anthology, will debut this coming Sunday.

Among the latest visitors to this vacation spot are Aimee Lou Wood (known for “Sex Education”), Parker Posey (renowned for “Dazed and Confused” and “Scream 3”), Patrick Schwarzenegger (“Scream Queens”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout,” “Justified”). Regrettably, Tanya, portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge, won’t make a return this season. However, another familiar face from the previous season will be seen – Natasha Rothwell, who played spa manager Belinda in the first installment.

In this upcoming Emmy-winning series, a distinguished cast will be joined by Lisa Manobal, more commonly known as Lisa from Blackpink, who is set to make her acting debut. As a key member of the globally acclaimed K-pop girl group, the versatile 27-year-old artist is experiencing a significant breakthrough in her career this year.

Who is Lisa?

Born and nurtured in Buriram, Thailand, Manobal developed a passion for dance with the group We Zaa Cool during her childhood years. This passion led her to an audition at YG Entertainment, a renowned agency known for launching some of K-pop’s most famous stars. At just 13 years old, she was selected for their training program, relocated to South Korea, and embarked on her dream to become a K-pop idol. After undergoing five years of rigorous training, she adopted the stage name Lisa and debuted as a member of Blackpink.

Who does Lisa play in ’The White Lotus?’

The famous musician will portray Mook, a character who works at a resort and serves as a health advisor. At this point, additional details about her role are scarce, but it’s known that the character Gaitok, played by Tayme Thapthimthong, is smitten with her. In the series trailer, she’s shown dancing onstage and can be heard saying, “People come to Thailand for various reasons – some are running away from someone, while others are searching for someone.

What is Blackpink?

In the year 2016, the four-member K-pop girl band (consisting of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa) put out the hits “Whistle” and “Boombayah”. These songs quickly became sensations in South Korea, with “Whistle” taking the number one spot on the charts.

Blackpink’s individual members each contribute unique aspects to the group: Jisoo serves as the primary vocalist and is recognized as the face of the band, Jennie excels in rapping and shares lead vocals, Rosé showcases her strong singing abilities and leads dance moves, while Lisa stands out as a skilled rapper and top-notch dancer. In K-pop, the distinction between a main role and a lead role is based on skill level, with a main role being the more prominent position.

As time went on, members of the group consistently put out music and performed, earning them international recognition. They amassed a large following of fans known as blinks, and their videos like “Ddu-Du Ddu Du” from 2018 and the bilingual hit “Kill This Love” have racked up over 2 billion views each, making them the second and third most viewed music videos by a Korean artist. Throughout their career, they’ve teamed up with prominent musicians such as Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and Selena Gomez. In the year 2023, they made history by being the first Asian act to headline Coachella.

Is Blackpink still together?

By the close of 2023, Blackpink band members extended their agreement with YG Entertainment for group engagements, giving them greater autonomy over individual projects such as solo performances. Earlier, each member had already been putting out solo music, and Jennie was featured on HBO’s “The Idol” as Dyanne.

2024 saw Rosé breaking into the Billboard charts via her hit collaboration with Bruno Mars, “APT”, and the debut of her first full-length studio album titled “Rosie”. Jennie teamed up with Matt Champion, a former member of Brockhampton, for the mellow electronic single “Slow Motion”, featured on Korean rapper Zico’s track “Spot!”, and most recently teamed up with Dominic Fike for “Love Hangover”. Coming up next from Jisoo is her first solo project, “Amortage”, set to drop this Saturday.

Despite focusing on their personal career paths, the members of Blackpink are expected to visit various locations soon, hinting at a global tour scheduled for around 2025.

What else is Lisa working on this year?

In the year 2024, Lisa sealed a solo contract with RCA Records. Since then, she’s been full steam ahead, unveiling three singles in the previous year: “Rockstar,” “New Woman” (featuring Rosalía) and “Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me).” Her latest project is a joint effort with pop sensations Doja Cat and Raye titled “Born Again.” Coming up next, her debut album, “Alter Ego,” will be out on Feb. 28 – all while Season 3 of “The White Lotus” unfolds.
