Police have confirmed that Food Network chef Anne Burrell wasn‘t given Narcan when paramedics found her unresponsive in her Brooklyn home’s shower. Narcan is a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.
According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Stuart Claxton, the husband of the deceased, found her unresponsive around 7:40 a.m. on June 17, 2025. Paramedics arrived and pronounced her dead at approximately 8:00 a.m.
According to the report, police found a bowl with several over-the-counter medications beside her.
In July, the New York City medical examiner determined that her death was a suicide. The report indicated she died from a toxic combination of drugs, including amphetamine, ethanol, and two antihistamines – diphenhydramine and cetirizine.
Naloxone, often known as Narcan, is a common medication used to quickly reverse opioid overdoses and can lessen the effects of some amphetamines. However, according to the report, paramedics found Burrell could not be saved and therefore did not give him the drug.
Investigators discovered a possible suicide note and concerning writings in the chef’s bedroom following her unexpected death at age 55.
According to a report by the New York City Police Department and as reported by People magazine, a letter suggesting Burrell was considering suicide was found in his bedroom, along with a journal filled with entries indicating suicidal thoughts.
According to the report, her spouse told police that Burrell had no history of suicide attempts or discussions about suicide, and hadn’t displayed any behaviors that would suggest she was considering it.
According to a recent police report, when Burrell was discovered deceased, her husband stated the bed was neatly made – something he found unusual.
Claxton found her unconscious on the bathroom floor, surrounded by over-the-counter pills. He tried to wake her by shaking her and slapping her face, but when that didn’t work, he called 911.
According to the New York Times, police found about 100 pills of various types near her when she was discovered.
Emergency responders attempted CPR, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Claxton married Burrell in October 2021 in upstate New York. He reportedly last saw her alive around 1:00 am on June 17th of last year, several hours before finding her unconscious in the bathroom.
The night before she passed away, she performed in an improvisational comedy show at a Brooklyn club, where she’d previously taken classes.
She recently began taking acting classes, telling Tori Spelling on her podcast that she started just yesterday. She described the class as an improv workshop specifically designed for actors.
She said there were around eight people in the class, and she was the oldest. Everyone else seemed to have a master’s degree in theater.
Burrell playfully wondered if the talented young performers ever thought to themselves, “What’s this older woman doing here?”
She had just surprised her fans by stepping away from Worst Cooks in America after its 28th season, which finished airing between January and February of the previous year.
She explained to Spelling that while she enjoys cooking and has explored television work, she has other passions she wants to pursue, and her current acting work is just a starting point.
I’m really enthusiastic about this! I also have a few other projects in the works, but I’m not quite ready to talk about them yet. I’m hopeful that some great news will be coming soon.
Her family, deeply saddened by her passing, shared that she had a radiant smile and a warmth that extended beyond her immediate circle, positively impacting people all over the world.
The Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America” recently returned after a hiatus, but its first new episodes since the passing of Chef Anne Burrell were bittersweet for viewers who missed her greatly.
Burrell earned a dedicated following on the show thanks to her experience with Mediterranean cooking. She honed her skills working as a chef at popular New York restaurants like Felidia and Savoy.
She developed a love for cooking as a child, inspired by the famous TV chef, Julia Child.
