Foo Fighters’ current drummer was previously with Nine Inch Nails, while Nine Inch Nails now have the ex-drummer of Foo Fighters.
Or more casually:
The Foo Fighters’ new guy behind the drums used to play for Nine Inch Nails, and Nine Inch Nails just got the previous drummer from Foo Fighters.
This year, Josh Freese was let go from Foo Fighters, who he joined two years ago as their drummer, after the unfortunate passing of Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Not long after, the band announced that Ilan Rubin, a seasoned touring and session musician who previously played with Nine Inch Nails, would be taking his place. At just 32 years old, Rubin became the youngest artist ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, and he had already spent 16 years with the band.
As a devoted Foo Fighters fan, I’m excited to share that the band has announced new tour dates! They’ll be rocking Indonesia on October 2, followed by Singapore, Japan, and Mexico City. The announcement comes with the release of “Today’s Song,” their latest track since 2023, marking their 30th anniversary.
In a heartfelt note about the new song, Dave Grohl reflected on the band’s journey, saying, “We’ve experienced highs and lows, victories and defeats, but we’ve always stood together, for each other, no matter what.” It seems that through the years, they’ve been there to heal broken bones, hearts, and spirits. As Grohl puts it, “Life is a road best traveled together.” Can’t wait to see what’s next for this incredible band!
Despite seeking other opportunities, Freese didn’t have to wait long for a new job offer. With Nine Inch Nails facing an unexpected drummer vacancy a week before their “Peel It Back” North American Tour kicked off, they announced that they had brought back Freese, who played with the band from 2005-2008. The band shared a picture of Freese on social media with the caption “Let’s get going,” confirming the re-hire.
Troy Freese recently shared a statement indicating his return to Nine Inch Nails. He explained that leaving the band at the end of 2008 was one of the most difficult decisions he ever had to make, as his wife was expecting their third child, and he felt it necessary to step away from life on tour to be with his family. Freese shared that performing with Nine Inch Nails always left him feeling “That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it” after every show, an intensity and satisfaction he rarely experienced elsewhere. Now, being back on tour with Trent and the rest of the crew, helping them excel night after night, is something he’s incredibly eager about.
As a passionate moviegoer, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy upon hearing the news about the drummer swap between the two iconic acts with massive tours on the horizon. If Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham can mend their relationship and reunite peacefully on stage, we’re in for an era of golden rock collaborations that will surely captivate our hearts!
