FNAF 2 Movie Just Revealed Michael Afton’s Evil Plan

The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 revealed that Michael Afton is a villain with a sinister agenda. This second film in the Blumhouse-produced series, based on Scott Cawthon’s popular horror games, expands the story and introduces more characters from the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe, including William Afton’s son, Michael.

Warning – This article contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

As a long-time fan, I was really curious about the connection between Josh Hutcherson’s Mike Schmidt and the infamous Michael Afton. After years of speculation, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie finally clarified things – they’re actually two different people! It turns out Freddy Carter plays Michael Afton, who is the son of Matthew Lillard’s villainous character. What surprised me even more was that Michael isn’t the hero like many of us expected from the games; he’s a villain in the movie instead!

We first meet Michael Afton as he guides a group called the Spectral Spookers on a tour of the old, closed-down Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. After bringing Lisa (Mckenna Grace) and her friends inside, he vanishes, leaving them vulnerable to the animatronics lurking within.

Michael’s decision to put Lisa and the others in danger first hinted that he wasn’t acting with good intentions, but the final part of the movie makes it clear who Michael Afton is and what his malicious plan involves.

Okay, so things just got really intense! After Mike, Abby, and Vanessa get attacked by all those animatronics – the Marionette, the Toy guys, and even the Withereds – Mike drops a huge bomb. He admits he’s an Afton, William Afton’s son and Vanessa’s brother! Then, he says he wants to “continue his father’s legacy,” which is seriously scary. It looks like we’re about to find out Mike is going to be another villain in the FNAF story, and honestly, I did not see that coming!

Let me take a guess – she didn’t mention me, did she? That’s just like my sister. I’m Michael, Michael Afton.

Vanessa: “Leave them alone Michael, they haven’t done anything wrong.”

Michael: “I think our father might strongly disagree with that.”

Mike: “Your father is dead.”

Michael: “Yeah, but I’m here to continue his legacy.”

Why Is Michael Afton Evil in FNAF 2 Movie But Not the Games?

The revelation that Michael Afton is a villain in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a significant change for the series. Previously, in the first FNAF game, players controlled Michael (also known as Mike Schmidt) as the hero—a security guard trying to make it through the night at a spooky pizza restaurant.

A popular theory suggests that Afton reappears in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 as the Older Brother, and occasionally as the character you control. However, when you’re not playing as him, the Older Brother is shown as a bully and sometimes even a villain.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location, Michael returns, tasked by his father with a difficult mission: to find his sister’s soul, which is trapped inside the Circus Baby animatronic. Through entries in a logbook, we learn more about Michael Afton, and it’s suggested he’s struggling with guilt over his father’s actions – the deaths of multiple children and the imprisonment of his sister.

Unlike the games, the movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 portrays Michael as wanting to continue his father’s work, even though the game character never showed any interest in being a villain. It seems the films have divided the character of Michael Afton into two separate people: Mike Schmidt (played by Hutcherson), who’s the hero, and Afton’s villainous son (played by Carter). This sets the stage for a rivalry between them as the series goes on.

FNAF 2 Ennard Theory Might Explain Michael Afton’s Evil Turn

One possible explanation for Michael Afton’s change in behavior throughout the games is that he’s already connected to Ennard in some way.

In Sister Location, Michael Afton is tricked into entering the Scooping Room—a hidden area containing a machine that takes apart animatronics. The machine removes his internal organs and replaces them with Ennard, a combined animatronic made from pieces of Circus Baby, Ballora, Funtime Freddy, Bon-Bon, and Funtime Foxy. Ennard then uses Michael’s body as a disguise to escape the pizzeria.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about the possibility of a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 movie! I’m really hoping they explore Michael Afton’s backstory. There’s a popular theory that he might actually be an animatronic disguised as a person, which would explain why he always seems to be up to no good. The second movie showed us they can blend humans and animatronics with the Marionette, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they went that route with Michael, revealing him as Ennard. It would be a seriously creepy twist!
