Florence Pugh Steals The Thunder
The character portrayed by Sebastian Stan, Bucky Barnes, stands out significantly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, I’m apprehensive about a potential recurring issue with Bucky after reading initial reactions to the upcoming movie, Thunderbolts, which shower praise on Florence Pugh. I don’t mean to imply that Pugh’s acclaim isn’t warranted, quite the contrary. From the start, I knew that the Academy Award-nominated actress would be a valuable addition to the MCU, and her portrayal of Yelena Belova has been both heartfelt and humorous. In fact, my anticipation for the next MCU film stems from the impressive cast of Thunderbolts.
Although the diverse cast of characters resembled an Avengers-like team last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”, it seemed that Bucky Barnes would play a significant role, perhaps even leading the way. However, recent previews for “Thunderbolts” suggest that he will indeed lead this group as a desperate measure to contain the Void. Despite the generally favorable initial responses to the film, I found myself questioning Bucky’s extensive participation in it.
For 14 Years, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes Has Been Sidelined
Bucky Barnes Debuted As A Sidekick And Has Always Since Been Secondary To Others
Bucky Barnes has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time, with a tenure that ranks among the longest, alongside a select few like Thor and Bruce Banner, who were original Avengers. However, despite taking leading roles in films such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes has found it challenging to break free from his initial role as sidekick, which was established in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. This is evident even when he was the main character, as he often played second role to HYDRA and Sam Wilson in those instances.
Every Movie And Show Bucky Barnes Has Appeared In Within The MCU | |
---|---|
MCU Appearance | Role |
Captain America: The First Avenger | Steve Rogers’ best friend/sidekick. |
Captain America: The Winter Soldier | The titular villain and controlled by HYDRA. |
Ant-Man | Appears in the post-credits teaser for Captain America: Civil War. |
Captain America: Civil War | A key plot device, but still secondary to Captain America, who strives to protect him. |
Black Panther | Appears in the post-credits scene after being cured by the Wakandans. |
Avengers: Infinity War | One of many Avengers fighting Thanos. |
Avengers: Endgame | One of many Avengers fighting Thanos. |
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier | Titular hero, but still secondary to Sam Wilson’s journey to accepting the Captain America mantle. |
Captain America: Brave New World | Appears in a cameo to help Sam Wilson accept his new role. |
In contrast to Bucky Barnes having a more extensive resume, Sam Wilson seized the limelight following Steve Rogers’ departure. Although I have no objection to this – I strongly support Sam Wilson as the ideal candidate to replace Steve Rogers – Steve’s retirement presented an opportunity for Bucky to emerge from his shadow. Regrettably, he did so only to find himself in Sam Wilson’s shadow instead. I had hoped that the team, Thunderbolts*, would alter this situation, but the initial responses to Thunderbolts* suggest a different outcome.
The Thunderbolts* Reactions Focused A Lot On Florence Pugh’s Performance
Many Of The First Reviews Lavish Pugh With Praise
Brave New World”, which were centered around its reliance on the familiar Marvel formula. Notably, Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman are receiving praise for their performances in “Thunderbolts*”.
At NextBestPicture, it’s noted that Florence Pugh plays a significant role in shoulderning the emotional intensity of the film. On the other hand, Lewis Pullman presents a layered portrayal, exhibiting compassion as he grapples with inner conflict.
JacobFisherDF points out the strong camaraderie among the film’s actors, however, he particularly praises the acting skills of Pugh and Pullman.
Apart from applauding Thunderbolts*, BeanzGotGamez highlights the camaraderie among its members and their emotional depth. Notably, he cheers on Pugh’s character Yelena, declaring her as the standout performer of the group.
@EmilyVMurray also praises Pugh, asserting that she “walks away with it.”
There’s a point where my anxiety arises. While I wholeheartedly agree with the acclaim Florence Pugh has received, it seems to imply that she dominates the movie scene quite extensively. This is somewhat puzzling because, given equal screen-time, her fellow Oscar nominee, Sebastian Stan, would likely have been acknowledged as well. Regrettably, this leaves me concerned about Bucky’s role in the storyline.
I’m Worried Thunderbolts* Won’t Give Bucky Barnes The Story He Deserves
Bucky Barnes Is Overdue His Time In The Limelight
If Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova is taking center stage in Thunderbolts*, it implies that Bucky Barnes may be sharing the limelight again. Given that Thunderbolts* seems like an ideal platform for Marvel Studios to make Bucky Barnes the head of the team, it appears they are choosing a different route. The fact that teams in the MCU are usually headed by primary characters such as Captain America and Peter Quill makes this decision even more puzzling.
If Yelena Belova is leading the Thunderbolts, Bucky Barnes might not be the main character again, despite it being a good opportunity for him to lead the team. This choice seems strange because teams in Marvel’s universe are usually led by main characters like Captain America and Star-Lord.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Bucky Barnes is a widely beloved character whose appeal rivals even Loki’s. This popularity stems from his complex and empathetic nature, as he is a tormented soul with a checkered past, struggling to make amends for wrongdoings committed under duress. The upcoming series, Thunderbolts, seems tailor-made for Bucky Barnes, a character who deserves equal limelight as Sam Wilson. However, things don’t appear optimistic regarding his involvement in the project at this time.
