Florence Pugh reveals she resorted to ‘injuring herself’ and ‘chopped huge chunks out of her hands’ when she suffered a ‘breakdown’ following ‘messy’ relationship split

Florence Pugh has shared that she coped with the end of a previous relationship by intentionally hurting herself, following what she described as an emotional breakdown.

The 29-year-old actress shared that during the relationship, she kept her struggles and anxieties hidden from her family and friends, believing they wouldn’t understand or deserve to know.

I recently heard Florence discuss a really difficult time in her life on the Louis Theroux podcast. She described how, when a relationship left her completely drained – both physically and emotionally – she started self-harming, specifically cutting herself. It was a raw and honest account of dealing with extreme exhaustion and pain.

For a long time, I kept that part of my life private, even from my friends. Eventually, things fell apart, and I had a breakdown – it was clear to everyone that something was wrong.

If you’re physically feeling the effects of stress – like trouble sleeping, overindulging in alcohol, or experiencing digestive issues due to anxiety – your body is sending you a clear signal that something is wrong.

I used to get hurt a lot while chopping things, even seriously injuring my hands. Thankfully, that hasn’t happened to me in a long time.

I was incredibly panicked, and my body reacted by causing me to hurt myself as a way of trying to cope – it was a strange way of signaling that I needed help.

Looking back, it’s clear something was off, but it’s easy to see things clearly after they’ve happened.

She explained that when problems arise, or when someone experiences small, subtle acts of disrespect or abuse – whether it’s through words, emotional manipulation, or controlling behavior – it can gradually become increasingly abnormal and damaging.

Eventually, you realize things have gotten strange, and you’ve somehow gotten used to it all.

Feeling this way isn’t right, and being treated like this isn’t okay. Ultimately, it just feels bad.

Florence revealed on the podcast that she’s dating someone and is very happy, though she didn’t share who her boyfriend is.

The actress discussed her previous relationship, stating she stands by how she responded to online criticism. She had previously told those criticizing her that they shouldn’t be giving her unsolicited advice about her personal life, and she doesn’t regret that stance.

Florence explained to Louis that her relationship faced a lot of harsh criticism simply because of their age difference.

I defended my right to act as I pleased, as well as supporting him and asserting my own independence. Surprisingly, that actually convinced some people to see things differently.

‘I’ll always defend people that I love, I will always stand up for them.’
