Florence Pugh reveals she dressed up as her Midsommar character for Halloween after ‘abusing herself’ to play the role
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for Hollywood trends, I must commend Florence Pugh for her fearless approach to acting. Her portrayal of emotionally-charged characters like Dani in Midsommar and Amy March in Little Women showcases her versatility and dedication to her craft.
Last Halloween, Florence Pugh donned a costume representing her character Dani from the horror movie Midsommar, even though she had earlier admitted that she took on a challenging method-acting approach to embody Dani, going so far as to ‘subject herself’ to certain experiences for the role.
During their chat with Vanity Fair for their movie “We Live In Time,” the actress, who’s 28 years old, playfully inquired from her co-star Andrew Garfield, aged 41, about which role of hers he remembered from a Halloween costume.
Andrew said: ‘Wait you dress up as your own character for Halloween?’
Florence explained: “It’s stylish, you see, as it reminds me of Dani from Midsommar. I owned the original shirt, and when I wore it, it looked great.
2019’s horror movie featured Florence as Dani, paired with Jack Reynor portraying an American duo unwittingly entangled in a cult’s brutal activities, set in the Swedish countryside.
Dani’s sister commits suicide after killing both of their parents.
When the movie initially released, it sparked controversy due to its depictions of sexual assault, explicit full-frontal scenes, and distortions of Swedish cultural norms.
In a chat on the Off Menu podcast in March 2023, Florence admitted that she “definitely pushed herself” to fully immerse herself in her roles.
Florence shared with podcast hosts James Acaster and Ed Gamble that when she undertook the action, she was deeply engrossed in her character in a way she’s never experienced with any of her other characters before.
In a more natural and easily understandable way, ‘I hadn’t acted out a character experiencing that level of pain before, so I often placed myself in difficult scenarios, some that other actors might avoid, but I’d simply visualize the most distressing scenarios.’
Every day, the material became increasingly bizarre and challenging to handle. My thoughts grew darker and more dismal with each passing moment.
By the final stretch, it seems likely that I pushed myself beyond reasonable limits, possibly even exceeding what was healthy for me, in order to achieve that level of performance.
Following the completion of Midsommar, Florence promptly made her way to the Boston location where Greta Gerwig was filming Little Women.
The Oscar nominee was overcome with emotion during the switch between movies.
She recalled peering out from the airplane and experiencing overwhelming guilt, as she felt she had abandoned Dani in such a troubled state, leaving her behind in that field, she explained.
That experience was truly unusual for me; I’ve never encountered anything similar before. It seems as though I might have unconsciously carried a deep sense of guilt about the ordeal I put myself through. The feeling was almost as if I had abandoned her in that field, exposing her to potential harm, much like a creator who crafts something and then leaves it vulnerable without protection. Afterward, I moved on to work on another project.
Florence is currently on a promotional tour alongside Andrew for their new film We Live In Time.
Before its release on October 11, Andrew shared an anecdote about how the duo accidentally continued their intense, emotional love scene longer than intended, as they failed to hear the direction from the team to stop filming due to the intensity of the moment.
At a gathering on 92nd Street in New York City recently, he expressed to the audience: ‘The performance turns intense, since we carefully planned it.’
We find ourselves venturing a bit beyond our intended limits since we didn’t catch the signal to stop. It feels secure, so we think, “Let’s move onto the next step, let this develop, and we’ll keep going.
At some stage, it seemed as if we were both silently expressing the thought, ‘This undeniably appears to be an extended shot.’ or ‘At one moment, it felt as though we were both mentally communicating, ‘This certainly seems to be a longer scene.’
I glance upward and spot Stuart, as well as our boom operator, tucked away in a corner. Stuart holds the camera next to him, with his back against the wall.
We Live In Time follows the unconventional love story of a recent divorcée and an on-the-rise chef.
