As a woman who has spent years navigating the often-treacherous waters of the entertainment industry, I must say that I wholeheartedly support FKA twigs in her fight against what seems to be an outdated and flawed ruling by the ASA. In October, the star increased temperatures significantly by modeling for a retro Calvin Klein underwear advertisement.
She gave a provocative performance, standing unclothed except for a denim shirt that preserved her decency while posing.
Displaying her striking silhouette, FKA exuded an undeniable allure, captivating the camera with a seductive gaze.
Additionally, she posed effortlessly in more pictures, embodying a relaxed style while donning ’90s-style denim jeans and a black bralette featuring a deep scoop neckline.
During the photoshoot, the star also modelled a white denim shirt and a black textured bralette.
To perfectly finish off her appearance, FKA opted for an impeccable array of makeup and added some charm with a group of tiny hoop earrings.
Earlier this year, a ban on an ad featuring FKA partially undressed was lifted by regulatory authorities, after FKA herself lodged a complaint. This advertisement for the campaign came later.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) prohibited a poster due to its depiction of a woman in a manner that reduced her to a stereotypical sex symbol, displaying her lower back and partial breast.
Nevertheless, the watchdog made an uncommon move by overturning the original verdict following the celebrity’s use of Instagram to contest the decision.
The performer expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the initial decision showcased a bias or unfair treatment in the advertising world.
An illustration of comparable promotions for the Calvins brand’s “Calvins or nothing” campaign, starring Jeremy Allen White in just underwear, has been displayed without any objection or criticism.
As a committed fan following FKA twigs, I want to express my perspective on her powerful statement: ‘I don’t identify with the ‘typical sex symbol’ label they’ve assigned me.’
I observe a powerful, radiant woman of color whose resilient physique has surmounted pains that are hard for anyone to fathom.
She remarked: ‘After examining similar campaigns, both old and new, it’s difficult for me not to notice a hint of inconsistency in this situation.’
As a lifestyle advocate, I take immense pride in embodying my physicality, just like the iconic figures such as Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Grace Jones did before me. These trailblazers shattered barriers, paving the way for individuals like myself to express ourselves authentically and confidently.
Support came for her stance from fellow entertainers, with Michaela Coel, renowned writer and actress of I May Destroy You, among them.
After reconsidering their decision, the ASA’s governing body subsequently rescinded the ruling, finding that the depicted image perpetuated an old-fashioned gender stereotype.
Earlier this year, they announced that they had reconsidered and adjusted a previous judgment they made in an official decree.
In our prior decision, we concluded that since the advertisement focused on her body and physical attributes instead of what she wore, it portrayed FKA Twigs as a typical sex object based on stereotypes.
Following thorough deliberation, it’s our council’s opinion, serving as an impartial jury for UK advertising guidelines, that the depicted image does not contain sexually explicit content. Instead, it portrays FKA twigs as self-assured and in command, suggesting that her representation was not objectifying.
Although the decision has been made, the ASA Council maintains that the advertisement is excessively sensual, making it unsuitable for public display on billboards due to its potential visibility among children.
The ASA added: ‘The decision to revisit our original ruling took place in the context of the significant strength of public feeling, including views expressed by FKA Twigs, in response to our findings, but was driven by our concern that our rationale for banning the ad was substantially flawed.’
