FKA twigs’ New Album & Healing Programme: A Journey to EUSEXUA

FKA twigs discusses the sources of inspiration for her forthcoming album, EUSEXUA, as well as the healing program she developed in conjunction with it.

In a recent installment of Spotify’s Countdown To podcast, the 36-year-old vocalist had a conversation with renowned artist and composer, Imogen Heap.

Under the moniker FKA (formerly known as), whose birth name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, revealed personal reflections about the creation of the upcoming album and its significance to her, prior to its launch on January 24th.

In addition to introducing the concept of EUSEXUA, FKA twigs developed THE ELEVEN – a set of eleven principles focused on physical movement, serving as a means for personal healing. Each principle is influenced by her extensive career as a dancer and ongoing exploration of movement throughout her life.

Speaking about the album, the singer noted: “EUSEXUA embodies a blend of subtly psychedelic, innocently childlike, and playfully inquisitive examination of humanity. Beneath this surface, however, there’s an underlying raw, gritty, hard, and sexually charged undertone.

I developed these 11 foundational concepts and coined terms for each of them. As a side project related to the album, I also invented words such as ‘croning,’ which refers to an unhealthy obsession or dependency on technology.

* The 11 key areas in my life were the ones I believed I needed to examine and make changes within, so I could get nearer to achieving EUSEXUA.

She added: “EUSEXUA allows me to express myself freely and without inhibitions, it’s about embracing my sexuality, feeling more comfortable in my own skin, and reaching the peak of human experience as often as I can.

I came up with a 10-step healing regimen that involves a lot of twirling and shimmying. It’s very earthy and instinctual in nature.

Talking about the reason behind creating the album, she openly confessed: “It wasn’t optional; before EUSEXUA, I was barely holding on.

Reframing the sentiment, “It seems crucial for my existence; these 11 principles I developed are essential in bringing EUSEXUA to life, and they serve as my guide.

I am sharing these with the world, as they have been instrumental in my life. I can’t create art when I’m immersed in earlier iterations of myself.

Additionally, she shared insights into her dance history, stating: ‘At age seven, I began dancing and by twelve, I had become a professional. I participated in numerous dance competitions. Initially, I received classical training as a child, but as I grew older, I developed a dislike for dance.’

“I strongly disliked the restrictions connected with it, as well as the expectation that one’s physical appearance should conform to specific standards.”

This version maintains the original sentiment while using more natural and easy-to-read language. It conveys that the speaker found the rules restrictive and unappealing, and they also felt uncomfortable with the pressure to meet certain physical expectations or standards.

In September, the artist unveiled her groundbreaking performance art piece, categorized as conceptual, for the very first time at Sotheby’s – an esteemed auction house that has been around for 280 years. This marked a unique and historic moment in their long history.

She devised an artwork titled “The Eleven,” featuring a spinning ensemble of eleven dancers who would bring the piece to life through their movements.

FKA twigs refers to her art as a “life-enhancing movement initiative,” where performers execute symbolic movements intended for personal betterment.

These choreographed actions are meant to correspond to eleven different aspects of living.

She shared with the Financial Times that this approach she uses is quite comprehensive, centered on eleven key aspects of her life, many of which resonate with numerous individuals as well.

Audiences at ‘The Eleven’ were encouraged to incorporate the practice into their own lives.

Five years ago, the concept took shape, and it was ultimately realized in her studio located in east London. Later on, it was showcased at the esteemed Sotheby’s gallery.

The exhibit featured sketches, drawings, diaries, and Polaroids from the artist’s collection, along with photos taken by Jordan Hemmingway, enhancing the overall presentation.

The artwork was accompanied by a display of the artist’s sketchbooks, doodles, journals, and Polaroids, as well as photographs by Jordan Hemmingway, adding depth to the showcase.

Lastly:

The work was supplemented with an exhibit of the artist’s notebooks, artwork, personal diaries, and Polaroids, along with images captured by Jordan Hemmingway, enriching the display.

Hemmingway is twigs’ boyfriend who she revealed in a now deleted Instagram post in March 2023.

Twigs has since kept her relationship with the London-based photographer out of the public domain.

As she conceived the concept for this project, it’s been reported that she ended a tumultuous relationship with Hollywood actor Shia LaBeouf, allegedly marked by abuse.

In 2019, they parted ways, and in December 2020, FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court against him, alleging sexual, physical, and emotional mistreatment, as well as intentionally transmitting a sexually transmitted infection to her.

LaBeouf has denied all of FKA Twigs’ allegations.
