Everyone sometimes feels like switching up their music. After listening to a lot of intense genres like metal or hard rock, you might crave something more relaxing. That’s perfectly normal, and it’s okay to enjoy some mellow soft rock from time to time.
Styles have always evolved, and it’s easy to forget some great songs from the past. I recently heard a hit from 1976 that brought back memories of a lot of other fantastic music from that same year.
I started browsing Spotify and fell into a nostalgic loop, rediscovering a bunch of relaxing, feel-good songs I hadn’t listened to in years. Here are five of my favorites from that session.
Five silky smooth hits from 1976
England Dan & John Ford Coley – âIâd Really Love To See You Tonightâ
This song perfectly captures the smooth, easy-listening sound that was popular in the 1970s. It’s a gentle but feel-good soft rock track that was a major hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley in 1976. I hadn’t heard it in ages, but it came on the radio over the weekend and brought back memories.
The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a gold-certified hit. It also helped the duo achieve a top 20 album, Nights Are Forever, that same year. The song features beautiful strings, a catchy piano introduction, and an upbeat, cheerful tempo perfect for a bright, sunny day.
Bellamy Brothers – âLet Your Love Flowâ
I recently remembered another song! It probably just doesn’t fit the mood of those gloomy winter days we’re leaving behind. The duo behind it, David Bellamy and his brother Homer, started out playing country music. They had several successful songs, but “Let Your Love Flow” was the one that first brought them widespread attention.
The song became a major hit, topping the Hot 100 chart in May 1976. It still featured a country influence, with acoustic guitar and the brothersâ signature harmonies. Itâs a really enjoyable song that deserves another listen.
Sutherland Brothers & Quiver – âLying In The Arms Of Maryâ
Gavin and Iain Sutherland, a pair of brothers known for their music, teamed up with the band Quiver for this song. Iain wrote it, and the result was a blend of the brothersâ folk style and Quiverâs softer rock sound. It became a hit around the world.
Despite its popularity elsewhere, the song wasn’t a huge hit in the US, peaking at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1976. It did very well in the UK, Europe, and Africa, reaching the top 10 in those regions. Compared to its earlier songs, this one is more of a slow ballad, but it still maintains that signature smooth sound of the era.
Gallagher and Lyle – âI Wanna Stay with Youâ
If that song by the Sutherland Brothers had been a little different, things would be going much better for us right now. Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle, who later performed as Gallagher and Lyle, were known for their mellow sound, and the song âI Wanna Stay With Youâ really captures that style.
This song is very characteristic of the duo’s style and their popular music from the 1970s. Released in 1976, it was a minor hit in the United States and reached the top twenty in other countries. Itâs an upbeat and cheerful song with a good tempo, making it a pleasant listen.
Starland Vocal Band – âAfternoon Delight”
âAfternoon Delightâ was Starland Vocal Bandâs biggest hit, released in 1976. While some listeners initially found the song a little suggestive, that reaction has largely disappeared over time. It was a chart success and earned three Grammy nominations in 1977, ultimately winning the award for Best Arrangement for Voices.
This helps explain the song’s overall sound. The harmonies are rich and stand out, creating a cheerfully optimistic vibe â though the upbeat feel might also come from the song’s title and lyrics. It complements the other tracks on this collection nicely.
