Five interesting gimmicks from the Thunderbolts* trailer, including the poster
As a die-hard Marvel Cinematic Universe fan who has been through the highs and lows of this incredible franchise for the better part of two decades, I must say that the first Thunderbolts trailer was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! The anticipation leading up to its release was palpable, and it certainly did not disappoint.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve been buzzing with excitement ever since the long-awaited trailer for the first Thunderbolts was unveiled! The chatter among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts about this highly anticipated release has been intense. Even though the franchise has had its highs and lows, news like this always sparks lively discussions and speculation on where the MCU is heading next.
Many felt that “Thunderbolts” fits the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s counterpart to “Suicide Squad,” with characters who are morally questionable rather than evil masterminds. The appearance of Yelena (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) was notable, but the trailer (along with its promotional artwork) is particularly noteworthy from a marketing perspective.
The song choice
Initially, the trailer employed the track “Where Is My Mind?” by Pixies, a song that resonates with viewers as it was featured in the memorable closing scene of Fight Club. It’s unclear if this musical choice is intended to hint at the film’s future events, but we will have to wait and see.
Yet, the song is now used so frequently that it has evolved into a common device, or cliche. Hearing it in the Thunderbolts trailer felt overly casual and perplexing.
The font use
In relation to the title, while the asterisk hinted by Kevin Feige at ComicCon 2024 remains a subject of speculation for everyone as he stated “we won’t discuss it further until after the movie is released,” there’s another aspect that merits discussion: the typography employed.
The generic Sans-Serif of the logo title seemed a fresh change of pace. However, the Impact typeface in the trailer is more questionable than inventive since that font is typically used for meme templates and tabloid headlines. Bizarre.
The length
Initially intended as a brief sneak peek, the Thunderbolts trailer ran for an unexpectedly prolonged 3 minutes and 25 seconds. This extended duration allowed for the inclusion of both Pugh’s character Yelena and Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov, offering fans a more comprehensive glimpse into the film.
Though, it also stacks the screentime for the rest of the major characters, especially Lewis Pullman’s Bob or Sentry, and heightens the rap sheet of the Thunderbolts team members.
Yelena’s new look
Yelena undergoes a transformation with a fresh wardrobe that includes a new suit and a shorter hairstyle. Contrary to her dark outfit in the series ‘Hawkeye’, the younger version of Black Widow is dressed in a full-body black attire, mimicking Natasha Romanoff’s appearance during Avengers: Infinity War.
Without a doubt, the noticeable transformation in Yelena’s appearance seems significant, symbolizing her acknowledgment and forthcoming role as a hired felon by the government.
The poster
The posters for the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had a mix of hits and misses consistently. While some, like the clever tagline for The Marvels and the Avengers-filled teasers for Ant-Man, are well-received, there are also poor designs, such as those with floating heads and unattributed names.
However, the poster for Thunderbolts* finds itself in a zone that’s both creative and somewhat debatable. It appears similar to the poster for This is the End, but it harmonizes well with the movie’s concealed dysfunction and nonchalance. Notably, Bob being obstructed by Bucky’s rifle magazine stands out as a striking element.
Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2, 2025.
