First reactions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are coming in before it hits theaters, and people are impressed with its look and animation. Some even say it’s as good as, or better than, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023. The film recently had its premiere in Kyoto, Japan, and will be released in the US on April 1, 2026.
Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key are all returning to voice their characters from the first movie. Joining them this time are new actors Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, and Brie Larson.

Reviews for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie claim that those who liked the first one will enjoy it.
Andy Robinson from VGC News gave the film a glowing review on X (formerly Twitter). He described it as similar to the previous installment, but elevated by a fantastic lead performance. He called it a fast-paced, exciting experience – ‘a 100-minute sugar rush with tons of fan-pleasing moments’ that rarely slows down.
Robinson, who plans to share a complete review tomorrow, explained that while the film has similar problems to the original, fans will still likely enjoy it.
Matt Ramos, a popular content creator known as Supes, believes fans who liked the first Super Mario movie will likely love this one. He explained that the new film builds on the strengths of the original and elevates it to a higher level.
I was really struck by how gorgeous this movie is. Honestly, it might be Illumination’s most beautiful film yet! Every single shot looks like a painting, and the colors, settings, and overall scope of the movie are just incredible – it’s on a whole other level.
He explained that the action scenes were more expansive than in the first film, fitting the sequel’s story which takes place across the galaxy. Ramos also praised the movie’s ability to give all the characters – both familiar faces like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, and new additions like Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Princess Rosalina – satisfying roles.
The YouTuber then discussed how Fox McCloud and Bowser Jr. were presented in the game. He quickly praised Fox, calling him “amazing,” and said he’d share a more detailed analysis in a future video. He also enjoyed Bowser Jr., finding all of his lines funny. He particularly liked the relationship between Bowser Jr. and Bowser, describing it as both amazing and hilarious.
Ramos praised the movie’s use of music from The Super Mario Galaxy games. He added that while the first film felt like an introduction, this one was a significant and exciting step forward.
