First look at Olivia Colman’s transformation for “twisted” romance that’s “audacious and delightful”

A new image has been released for Olivia Colman’s upcoming film, Wicker, hinting at a dark and unusual love story and promising a strong ensemble cast.

The film, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, is based on Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story, The Wicker Husband. Olivia Colman stars as a lonely fisherwoman who lives on the edge of town and is often made fun of for being single and, well, a bit smelly.

When she asks a basketmaker to create a husband for her, she shocks her neighbours and unexpectedly finds love, leading to a relationship that breaks with local customs.

Colman stars alongside Peter Dinklage, Elizabeth Debicki, and Alexander Skarsgård.

The movie will debut at the Sundance Film Festival, happening in Park City and Salt Lake City between January 22nd and February 1st.

The festival website describes Wicker as a captivating new film from Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, who previously made Save Yourselves!. It’s based on a short story by Ursula Wills and explores themes of jealousy, relationships, and the pressures of fitting into society.

Wilson and Fischer vividly portray this quirky medieval village, supported by a talented cast and plenty of clever humor.

The review continues by highly praising the film’s actors, particularly Olivia Colman, who plays a surprisingly complex fisherwoman. Her character challenges expectations and fights for both love and respect from the mysterious and self-controlled man played by Alexander Skarsgård.

A blend of fairytale, playful history, and delightful oddness, Wicker challenges our traditional ideas about marriage, making room for genuine connection and love to blossom.

David Michôd, the Australian filmmaker behind acclaimed works like Animal Kingdom and Christy, is producing a new film called Wicker. The project was first announced in 2023.

The movie has finished filming, but there’s no news yet on when it will be released to the general public, only that it premiered at a film festival.

Wicker has its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival.
