Following his role as Mike Lazaridis in the film BlackBerry, Jay Baruchel is now set to play real-life stuntman Ken Carter in a new movie called The Stunt Driver. A first image of Baruchel as Carter has been revealed.
We’ve gotten a first look at Jay Baruchel and Ed Helms (known from The Office and The Hangover) in their new movie, The Stunt Driver. The film, directed by Michael Dowse, is based on the 1981 documentary The Devil at Your Heels and tells the incredible true story of Ken Carter, also known as “The Mad Canadian.” Carter was a daring stunt driver who, in the 1970s, attempted to jump a rocket-powered car over the mile-wide St. Lawrence Seaway – a famous and risky stunt that would have sent him flying from Canada into the United States. The movie follows Carter’s determined effort to make his mark, even as he struggled with personal issues, public skepticism, and competition from another daredevil.
Protagonist Pictures will handle international sales for the upcoming film, The Stunt Driver, which is currently being finalized. According to Deadline, the film is a moving and funny true story, directed by Michael Dowse, known for his heartwarming style. Protagonist Pictures CEO Dave Bishop praised the film’s cast and said it beautifully captures the excitement and emotional depth behind stunt work, and they are excited to share it globally.
I’m so excited to be working with Protagonist on bringing Ken Carter’s incredible story to life! It’s a story that really gets to you – anyone who’s ever faced a tough challenge or been knocked down will connect with it. Ken is just such an inspiring, funny, and relatable underdog, and honestly, I think everyone will see a little bit of themselves in him.
Jay Baruchel and Randall Helms star in The Stunt Driver, joined by Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand), Laurence Leboeuf (Shoresy), and Dan Bakkedahl (Veep). Helms plays Dick Keller, a talented car engineer tasked with building a rocket-powered vehicle for a potentially record-breaking and incredibly risky stunt. Foster portrays Evel Knievel, who director Dowse recently pointed out has a striking resemblance to the legendary performer. Leboeuf plays Gloria, the devoted girlfriend of Baruchel’s character, Ken Carter, and Bakkedahl is Carter’s manager. Joe Cobden (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Marc Beaupré (Hunting Daze) complete the cast of The Stunt Driver.
Jay Baruchel’s Last Biopic Was Overlooked Despite Critical Acclaim
Jay Baruchel is known for his comedic roles in popular films like Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, and Goon. However, he’s recently been exploring different types of movies, including the 2023 biographical film BlackBerry. This movie tells the story of the rise and fall of the BlackBerry phone and received very positive reviews, earning a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the critical success, BlackBerry didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $3 million due to its limited release and being missed by many moviegoers.
As audiences wait for The Stunt Driver, they can head to Hulu to stream BlackBerry.
