First look at Ben Whishaw’s new real-life movie

As a cinephile with a penchant for biopics and a soft spot for New York City in the 70s and 80s, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming film, Peter Hujar’s Day. The first image unveiled has only fueled my anticipation, with Ben Whishaw perfectly embodying the enigmatic photographer Peter Hujar.

The initial image for the upcoming movie titled “Peter Hujar’s Day“, featuring stars Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall, has been revealed.

The biographical film, marking Whishaw’s reunion with director Ira Sachs after their work together on “Passages”, narrates the true tale of Peter Hujar, a renowned photographer, and Lisa Rosenkrantz (portrayed by Hall), who were prominent figures in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s.

Prior to its debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, slated for either January or February, the initial visual of the project has been unveiled. The picture features Whishaw, who is currently starring in Netflix’s “Black Doves,” in his character role.

The description for the movie states that Director Ira Sachs imaginatively reenacts Peter’s account given to author Linda Rosenkrantz in her Manhattan apartment in 1974, resulting in an entirely fresh piece of modern cinema with a playful touch.

In a self-consciously stylish manner, with Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall portraying the meeting remarkably accurately and gracefully, Peter Hujar’s Day offers an evocative journey tied to a specific era yet timeless in its depiction of time’s relentless progression.

In a previous conversation with Deadline, Whishaw, who was seen in the latest release of the Paddington series titled “Paddington in Peru”, referred to the film “Peter Hujar’s Day” as a “quite tiny and extremely personal production”.

One of Whishaw’s notable roles was portraying the character Q in the James Bond films, featuring in “Skyfall”, “Spectre”, and “No Time to Die”. After Daniel Craig left the franchise, the series future is uncertain, but Whishaw expressed his willingness to reprise the role.

He shared with the BBC that he suspects he won’t be part of the next installment. He believes the producers may opt for a fresh start with an entirely new cast. That’s his best guess, but he admits he’s unsure – he hasn’t received any information. If they ask him to return, however, he would gladly accept. He feels the project could benefit from renewed energy and a new team of actors. But should they extend an invitation, he would certainly consider it.

The film “Peter Hujar’s Day” makes its debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. As of now, a UK release date has not been announced.
