First look at ’70s-set heist movie with Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim

Initial glimpses of “The Mastermind” directed by Kelly Reichardt are now available, offering a tantalizing preview of Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim as they take on the leading characters.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but get excited about Reichardt’s forthcoming project! This time around, she’s taking us back to the 1970s in Massachusetts for a thrilling heist movie, following her successful 2022 dramedy, “Showing Up” starring the talented Michelle Williams. Can’t wait to see what she has in store!

In the upcoming movie, you’ll find O’Connor portraying the lead character, JB Mooney – a jobless carpenter transformed into an untrained art thief. The story primarily revolves around JB plotting his initial burglary.

A picture shows Haim in an unspecified position, engaged in a phone conversation and seated before a typewriter that appears to be in a newsroom setting. The scene strongly suggests that her character is a journalist delving into the Mooney case.

The film “The Mastermind” boasts an impressive ensemble, including actors like John Magaro, Hope Davis, Bill Camp, Gaby Hoffmann, and Amanda Plummer, along with several others.

Under the guidance of director Reichardt, this upcoming film is set to debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival towards the end of this month. Mubi has been entrusted with the worldwide distribution responsibilities for this cinematic production.

In the upcoming third installment of “Knives Out,” titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” we’ll find O’Connor sharing the screen with Daniel Craig, who once again takes on the character of private detective Benoit Blanc.

Similar to the tradition of the Knives Out series, the third installment boasts an impressive ensemble cast just like its forerunners, featuring Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Cailee Spaeny, and Andrew Scott, among others.

The Mastermind will premiere in competition at Cannes Film Festival. A wider release date is TBA.
