Get a first look at The Playboy of the Western World, a new dark comedy featuring Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney, the stars of Derry Girls. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting reunion project.
This stage play, written by John Millington Synge and directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, tells a story about growing up and finding yourself. It focuses on a strange situation involving a local person becoming famous.
The upcoming play centers around Pegeen Flaherty, whose ordinary life is disrupted when a young man enters her pub and confesses to murdering his father.

Christy Mahon, a man who committed murder, isn’t rejected by the community – instead, he’s surprisingly embraced as a hero. He quickly becomes popular and settles into village life, winning over the hearts of the locals. However, his newfound acceptance is threatened when another man unexpectedly appears.
The first photo shows Aisling Coughlan, who plays Pegeen Mike in the play, practicing in the rehearsal space. Other photos show the rest of the cast – including Allen McSweeney – getting ready for their parts.

The cast includes Siobhan McSweeney and Kathy Kiera Clarke, who starred as Sister George Michael and Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, alongside Éanna Hardwicke, Marty Breen, Declan Conlon, Lorcan Cranitch, Megan Cusack, and Naoise Dunbar, among other talented actors.
J.M. Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World will open at the Lyttelton Theatre in London on December 4th and run through February 28, 2026.
It’s awesome that Nicola Coughlan and Jamie-Lee O’Sullivan are working together again on stage! But honestly, I’m still holding out hope for more Derry Girls. It doesn’t look likely though, since the show finished its third season back in 2022, and it felt like a pretty good ending. I guess we’ll see if they bring those characters back at all, but I’m not getting my hopes up!

In 2023, McSweeney explained that the key to a great show is knowing when to end it, rather than prolonging it unnecessarily for many years.
I feel like we’ve ended the story on a positive note, with the characters finding hope and peace. I think it’s best to leave it at that. Honestly, I still think about Sister Michael constantly – she’s always on my mind. But ultimately, any decision about continuing the story wouldn’t be up to me.
The Playboy of the Western World premieres at London’s Lyttelton Theatre on 4 December.
