
At Evo Las Vegas 2025, esports.gg had the chance to play MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls for the first time. Here’s what we thought of it.
Fighting Souls for the very first time. This is our take on it.
As a thrilled fan on Day 3 of Evo Las Vegas 2025, the competition is heating up, and more champions are poised to etch their names in history. Stepping away from the tournament zones, there’s a buzz that’s just as electric. The MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls booth, for instance, is still attracting hordes of spectators. On Day 1, people queued up to play this game, and the queue only got longer on Days 2 and 3. Luckily, Esports.gg was granted an exclusive opportunity to give it a whirl.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls gameplay: First impressions
Initially, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls seemed visually appealing and well-crafted to us. Every character in the roster stood out uniquely, and their actions were clear to observe. The controls were user-friendly, catering to both beginners and experienced players. Beyond typical arcade inputs, it offered quick abilities for flashy combos that were easier to pull off. Moreover, linking light, medium, and heavy attacks resulted in gratifying sequences of moves.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls roster
In every contest, we formed a group of four characters for both players – I picked Captain America, Star-Lord, Iron Man, and Storm. Our adversary displayed the strength of Ms. Marvel and Doctor Doom, combining them with their own Star-Lord and Iron Man too.
Effortlessly transitioning between characters, their actions and style were consistent with their individual narratives within the Marvel universe. For instance, Iron Man hovered and fired at his adversary from above, Captain America engaged with his shield and skillfully caught it, while Ms. Marvel demonstrated an elongation technique. Star-Lord added a humorous touch by giving the signature finger gun pose when we switched to him.

In addition to the various maps, there were also hidden Easter eggs, one of which showcased a statue of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor from the Avengers. Even though Thor, the God of Thunder, wasn’t playable at Evo Las Vegas 2025, this could potentially be a clue hinting towards future expansions to the Marvel: Tōkon – Fighting Souls roster.

Customization, skill gauge, and more
In the game, each chosen character could aid players throughout matches. We had tools at our disposal, and quickly switching between them was possible by simply pressing a designated key. The game offered customizable control schemes, resulting in a different gaming experience for every player.
Regarding additional customization features, we had the freedom to select an outfit for each character when building our team. A representative from Arc System Works mentioned that they plan to release more character costumes in the future.
In the heat of the game, I’d tap into my unique abilities by managing the energy meter sitting snugly on the bottom-left side of my screen. A super ability would set me back 50 units, while pulling off an ultimate move demanded a full bar of 100.
