First Harris-Walz interview scores 6.3 million viewers on CNN

As a film enthusiast with a keen eye for political drama, I must say that Thursday’s CNN interview with Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was a riveting spectacle, not unlike a highly anticipated blockbuster premiere. The audience size of 6.3 million viewers was impressive, outshining the typical town hall or formal interview of a presidential or vice presidential candidate.

As a passionate filmgoer glued to my screen every Thursday night, I couldn’t help but tune in for the highly-awaited chat between CNN and the potential 2024 Democratic White House duo – Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. It turns out that over six million viewers joined me in this exciting political cinematic event, as revealed by Nielsen’s box office numbers!

The crowd was somewhat bigger than what you’d usually find at a town hall meeting or a formal interview featuring a presidential or vice-presidential candidate.

Since President Biden concluded his reelection campaign and publicly supported the vice president on July 21, Harris has not engaged in a thorough discussion with a journalist.

The matter became a frequent talking point for pundits and the Republican opposition after what was widely considered a strong nominating convention last week in Chicago.

6.1 million people tuned into Fox News on July 15 as Sean Hannity hosted an exclusive interview with Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), who was then the Vice Presidential candidate for former President Trump.

On July 22nd, the Republican candidates featured as a group on “Jesse Watters Tonight.” This occurred following their party’s convention and attracted a total viewership of 4.3 million people.

5.1 million people tuned in as Harris and President Joe Biden had their interview with ABC News after the Democratic National Convention in August 2020.

Trump often shows up on Fox News and other conservative networks, which makes his appearances seem routine rather than special events. His latest interview on CNN, held in a controversial town hall on May 10, 2023, attracted the attention of 3.3 million viewers.

During the CNN special lasting an hour, which aired between 9 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. (Eastern Time), approximately 17 minutes of the broadcast consisted of genuine dialogue between Harris and Walz. The candidates had previously been recorded during their campaigning activities earlier in the day across Georgia, a crucial battleground state for the election.

Harris engaged in a discussion with Dana Bash, one of the co-moderators of the crucial presidential debate between Trump and Biden in 2020, about changes in her policy stances following her brief presidential campaign. Additionally, she shared insights from her phone call with Biden on the day he ended his campaign and endorsed her.

Reaction to the speech predictably broke down along partisan lines.

In simpler terms, Anthony Scaramucci – a previous White House communications director under Trump and now a vocal critic of him – expressed on X that he believes Kamala Harris has performed admirably and will ultimately emerge victorious.

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro posted, “Wow is she awful.”

On Wednesday evening, Donald Trump will participate in a one-hour town hall event with Sean Hannity. Meanwhile, both Trump and Kamala Harris have agreed to attend a debate on September 10th in Philadelphia. This debate will be overseen by anchors from ABC News, David Muir and Linsey Davis.
