First Glance: “Supergirl”

The first trailer for DC Studios’ “Supergirl” is out, continuing the new DC Universe started by James Gunn with “Superman.” While “Superman” had some issues, it was generally well-received and ended with a brief appearance by Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, who’s the focus of this new film. Though James Gunn didn’t write or direct “Supergirl,” the trailer shows a movie that definitely feels like his style – expect a moody tone, quirky music choices, and a bit of crude humor, along with a tendency to break down classic tropes. Fans of Gunn’s work will likely enjoy these elements, but others might not.

It’s tough to get a read on what “Supergirl” will be like. The trailer shows Kara as someone who enjoys partying a bit too much, getting into trouble with some shady people while traveling in space. There are some scenes with her digital dog, Krypto, and she mentions her home planet, Krypton, which James Gunn previously altered in his Superman film. The most promising part is a quick, two-second shot of Jason Momoa as Lobo. Otherwise, it feels like a standard James Gunn-style movie, even though he didn’t direct it.
