First Deadpool & Wolverine impressions call it "violent, energetic, and super funny"

As a long-time gamer and avid moviegoer, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” next week. Having grown up with these characters in comic books and video games, their on-screen adventures have always held a special place in my heart. The first two Deadpool movies were huge successes, and the addition of Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Wolverine only adds to the excitement.

Next week, Disney is set to debut the film “Deadpool with Wolverine” in cinemas, generating immense excitement among audiences. Previous installments, fueled by Ryan Reynolds’ profanity-laced charisma, have achieved considerable success. The inclusion of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine adds further appeal. Moreover, fans are eager to witness how these two characters will be assimilated into the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe. Will Deadpool’s bawdy aesthetic undergo modification for a more harmonious fit alongside the likes of Spider-Man and Captain America?

At a fan gathering in Shanghai, China in early July, Director Shawn Levy previewed the initial 35 minutes of the upcoming movie. According to some accounts, there’s no sign of change. As @hzjoe03 put it on X, “The Fox merger notwithstanding, this appears to be a direct follow-up from Deadpool 2 in terms of story and tone. Nothing has been diluted; the humor landed, and the action was stunning…If the entire film is as impressive as the shown footage, then this could very well become one of my favorite Marvel movies and undoubtedly the best of the Deadpool series!”

Ian Sandwell similarly expressed that opinion: “The beginning is off to a good start with a hilarious opening joke. If you’re concerned that Deadpool has lost his edge, the gruesome and shocking first scene will put your fears to rest.”

The Deadpool films have been known for their self-deprecating humor, so it’s no shock that the latest installment pokes fun at Marvel. As Ben Child puts it in The Guardian, “The new movie can be seen as a witty critique of Marvel’s current exploration of multiversal realms. It’s just Deadpool being his mischievous self, but this time in a bigger superhero playground.”

“@amywestyy found the first 35 minutes entertaining, with a slight concern: The initial portion of this film is packed with self-aware humor that’s violent, energetic, and extremely funny. I merely hope it allows time to develop into a complete movie in the final 92 minutes. It’s great to see Hugh Jackman back in his suit. Matthew Macfadyen steals the show for me. Can’t wait to witness more!”

If she expresses worry that the film focusing on Deadpool and Wolverine will prioritize action over plot for the initial 35 minutes, I assume this is a common preference given the appeal of intense actions and humorous antics. However, considering the runtime of two hours and seven minutes, I also anticipate that deeper themes will be explored towards the end.

Deadpool & Wolverine is “the most wholesome R-rated film” ever

During an interview with Deadline, Marvel’s Kevin Feige shared tantalizing hints about an upcoming film, describing it as having both delightful and crude elements to put the audience at ease.

I will say — Hugh and Ryan have talked about this — and I think people can tell from the trailer and from the press tour so far, yes, it’s R-rated, yes there’s some language and blood, but the film is incredibly emotional. I keep calling it the most wholesome R-rated film that anybody can ever see. It really is a celebration of friendship and family and of found family. I don’t want to overdo it, but for all the R-rated raunchiness that gets attention, when people see the movie, it’s going to be about how heartfelt it is — in my opinion, much more than the first two Deadpool films. That’s what I’m really excited about, once people get past the ‘F’ words and the R-rating, to see how sweet it is.

Kevin Feige has overseen the mostly PG-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception, and it’s hard not to detect a hint of apprehension in his statement. It seems he’s trying to keep the family audience engaged despite the film’s adult humor, which includes jokes about anal sex, snorting coke, and other mature themes. However, I believe Feige can relax; the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine movie is predicted to be a huge success when it hits theaters on July 26.
