Fiona Shaw responds to recasting for highly anticipated new ’80s-set BBC thriller

Fiona Shaw has addressed the news of her role change in the upcoming BBC series “Honey,” a Cold War drama that acts as a prequel to “Killing Eve.

Written by Emma Moran of Extraordinary, a six-episode storyline is planned, focusing on the character of Carolyn Martens who will assume the identity of “Marta” while working undercover for MI6 in East Berlin.

The narrative revolves around Marta, a 24-year-old character, who is a young spy. Her mission is to elude Friedrich Bauman, the newly appointed Head of Counter Espionage for the Stasi in the year 1982. In this suspenseful tale, the part of Carolyn/Marta will be reassigned – a change that Shaw expresses enthusiasm towards.

According to a conversation with RadioTimes.com, the actress expressed her anticipation about who will portray her character in the future, considering she is 30 years younger.

Shaw pointed out that the individual in discussion didn’t necessarily have to resemble her closely. He went on to say: “They told me about it, but here’s the unfortunate truth, isn’t it? Time passes, and we become different people. I can’t recognize who that person was.

At this point, the BBC hasn’t disclosed any news about Honey’s casting or set a release date. For now, we have some insights from Moran who calls it a blend of romance and espionage, more specifically, a “romantic comedy with a twist of spying.

At the heart of this prequel lies a love triangle involving Marta, who finds herself drawn between two men: Friedrich Bauman and the charismatic CIA agent, Aaron Neeland.

Previewing its narrative, executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle enthusiastically shared: “The characters and storylines in Honey are intelligent, intense with violence, and brimming with strong sexual undertones. Emma’s scripts, as always, display a bold wit, elegance, and swift pace, while subtly conveying a deep sense of longing and romance.

Although Shaw won’t show up in “Honey,” the beloved character has been engrossed in other ventures, such as “Hot Milk” – a forthcoming drama movie starring Emma Mackey, slated for release in UK cinemas on July 4.

The film is inspired by Deborah Levy’s 2016 novel and portrays the journey of the character Sofia, played by Mackey, along with her ailing mother Rose (Shaw), as they venture to the Spanish town of Almería in search of an unusual healer. However, when Sofia develops feelings for the determined Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), she starts yearning for a life beyond the influence of her mother.

Honey is yet to receive a release date.
