Finn Wolfhard’s ‘Hell of a Summer’ Slays Critics: Why It’s the Next Cult Slasher Hit!
A Remarkable Summer”
In this feature-length film, we find Gaten Matarazzo, renowned for his role as Mike Wheeler in the widely recognized Netflix series Stranger Things , teaming up with actor Billy Bryk. Their collaboration began on the set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, leading to a strong friendship and productive partnership. Both directors appear in the film alongside an impressive ensemble cast, boasting familiar faces from Hollywood’s glamorous world.
This film serves as a heartfelt homage to iconic movies from the ’70s and ’80s, offering a contemporary twist to this time-honored concept. The delightful humor and playful tone keep the story relevant in the year 2025. Unfortunately, the film didn’t garner the response that was anticipated from audiences.
The movie titled “Hell of a Summer” premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and had a challenging journey to find distribution. Fortunately, Neon distributed it on April 4, 2025. At present, it boasts an approximately 50% rating for both the Tomatometer and audience score. Despite not making a significant impact in theaters or at the box office, the movie’s creativity and fun factor remain undiminished. Although “Hell of a Summer” may not have met the critical acclaim its creators anticipated, it certainly reflects a resurgence of horror content that audiences haven’t experienced consistently for some time.
The Slasher Genre Is Making a Comeback
Although Slashers Never Left, the Classic Story Is Being Lovingly Retold More Today Than Before
The horror film genre is richly varied and extensive in its scope within movie production. It caters to both budget-friendly, basic fright flicks as well as high-end, intricate “elevated” horror movies. There’s a wealth of entertainment to be had, and one particularly popular subgenre is the slasher film. Slasher films have been a mainstay in cinema for several decades now, finding their roots in the ’60s and ’70s. The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, played a significant role in shaping this genre, leaving an indelible impact on countless filmmakers who followed in his footsteps. It’s plausible that the movie was the first slasher, and it continues to draw audiences back, offering them chills and thrills time and again.
In the 1970s, the slasher genre took significant strides forward, producing timeless masterpieces such as Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Halloween. These films not only flourished but also established enduring tropes that continue to define this subgenre.
In simpler terms, these stories often feature a well-known masked murderer, a main character who survives until the end (often referred to as the ‘final girl’), and gruesome killings with lots of violence and gore. The 1980s were especially popular for these types of horror movies, with successful series like “Friday the 13th”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Child’s Play”, “Sleepaway Camp” and many other classics. However, by the 1990s, audiences started finding these horror films less engaging as they became predictable. But a pioneer in horror, Wes Craven, breathed new life into the genre with “Scream”. This movie was unique because it combined satire, self-aware humor, and traditional slasher elements.
In the ’90s and ’00s, there was an increase in the production of slasher films that were more self-aware or meta. A film made by Leigh Whannell and James Wan would reemerge during this time, serving as a significant inspiration for numerous filmmakers to create slashers featuring excessive violence and gore from the mid-2000s through early 2010s.
In the ’90s and ’00s, there was an upsurge in meta-themed slasher films. A movie produced by Leigh Whannell and James Wan would resurface during this period, influencing many filmmakers to create violent and gory slashers from the mid-2000s until early 2010s.
Although it might seem as if the slasher genre had faded into obscurity, overshadowed by popular genres like superhero movies, this isn’t entirely accurate. In fact, while some classic slasher films didn’t achieve the same level of success in their reboots as initially anticipated, a similar pattern can be observed today. For instance, both “Candyman” and “Child’s Play” have been reimagined in recent years, much like how “Friday the 13th,” “Halloween,” “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and “Scream” were revived decades ago. However, what sets today apart is a new wave of creativity within this subgenre.
In the contemporary era, not only are we witnessing numerous sequels reviving old horror franchises, but fresh and innovative slasher horror films are also emerging, some even gaining significant cultural recognition. Movies such as M3GAN, Abigail, Freaky, Terrifier, Fear Street, In A Violent Nature, X, Thanksgiving, and many others including Hell of a Summer have recently joined the ranks of modern horror slashers that truly embody the genre.
Hell Of A Summer Is a Classic Slasher
Hell of a Summer Continues the Reign of Modern Slashers
In April 2025, the movie titled “Hell of a Summer” hit the screens, featuring several familiar faces such as Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and others. The plot unfolds at a revitalized summer camp, where a fresh batch of counselors takes over for the new season. As night falls, each counselor meets their grisly demise, one by one, at the hands of a masked killer with a devilish appearance. This slasher film offers a contemporary blend of humor while maintaining traditional horror elements and incorporating a fresh Gen Z perspective.
While Hell of a Summer may not offer an unprecedented narrative or originality compared to what viewers have witnessed before, it doesn’t aspire to be so. Instead, it pays tribute to horror classics like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and Scream in a charming manner. What sets Hell of a Summer apart from typical modern fare is its distinctive cast and campy entertainment value. The film focuses more on its characters, who deliver numerous humorous lines and amusing moments that often overshadow the horror itself. These characters are caricatures of familiar archetypes, such as the jock, loner, overzealous camp leader, nerd, yet they’re blended with contemporary character tropes. For instance, there’s a self-centered social media influencer, a theater geek, a vegan, wise-cracking best friends, and even a film buff. There’s also a character named Noelle, who is a fusion of the traditional gothic teenager trope and an astrology enthusiast.
The humor in this film works well, yet the mystery aspect seems somewhat scattered. It’s a typical slasher mystery, but viewers figured out the culprit behind the brutal crimes quite quickly. Despite the overused plot device diminishing the overall quality of the movie, audiences still had a blast at the cinema due to the hilarious direction by Wolfhard and Bryk. There are numerous moments that will make you laugh out loud, combined with the enjoyable slasher experience. While Hell of a Summer might not be the best viewers have ever experienced, it’s a heartfelt tribute to the movies that fans of the genre cherished, presented with a witty, contemporary comedic twist.
Hell Of A Summer Is a Lot of Slasher Fun
Despite Critical Reviews, Hell of a Summer Is a Good Slasher Movie
A Summer Like No Other adds to the contemporary wave of horror films known as slasher movies, which have made a comeback in recent years. Slasher films have a rich history that can be traced back to classics such as Psycho, Halloween, and others. These films established familiar tropes and stories that became quite popular, but the genre began to lose steam in the ’90s and early ’00s. While slashers never truly disappeared, finding fresh, beloved stories during that time was challenging. However, renewed interest in the genre has led moviegoers to watch new slasher films almost monthly these days.
Despite not being as popular among audiences as other movies in the same horror-comedy genre, “Hell of a Summer” still manages to deliver a lot of fun and lighthearted entertainment by adding its unique twist to the classic slasher format. If you’re a fan of the genre, I highly recommend giving this fresh new slasher film a watch.
