For years, the American version of The Office was a major draw for Netflix, and many people subscribed just to watch it. But in January 2021, the show moved to Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, which frustrated fans who now had to pay for another subscription. Along with the original episodes, Peacock began releasing extended “Superfan” versions with extra scenes. Now, more than ten years after the show ended, Peacock is adding “Superfan” episodes for Season 9.
On January 26th, Peacock will release the “Superfan” version of The Office Season 9. This completes the rollout of extended episodes – known as “Superfan” versions – for all nine seasons of the show. With all seasons now available, the entire series has been updated with these extra scenes.
Peacock describes the 26 “Superfan” episodes of Season 9:
Join the team at Dunder Mifflin as they navigate life and work, from Scranton to Stamford! Enjoy longer episodes packed with extra scenes and all the classic moments you love.
The popularity of The Office really exploded when it started streaming on Netflix and then Peacock. But for dedicated fans who prefer DVDs, there were often extra perks: deleted or extended scenes from favorite episodes. These special “Superfan” versions aren’t completely new episodes – they’re re-edited versions of the originals, including those extra scenes, which can add up to 10 minutes to each episode.
The Expanding World of ‘The Office’

The American version of The Office is so popular that people often forget it’s even necessary to clarify it’s not the original. The show is based on the British The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. That version ran from 2001 to 2003, consisting of two short seasons and two longer specials. Ricky Gervais even made a brief appearance in the American series, where his character, David Brent, playfully interacted with Steve Carell’s Michael Scott.
The American version of The Office first aired in 2005 with just six episodes, and the very first episode closely followed the original British series’ premiere. It became a hit, running for nine seasons and a total of 201 episodes until 2013. The show’s success inspired versions in other countries too, including Canada, Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Poland, Germany, and Mexico.

While many fans tune into Peacock for extra episodes of The Office, the streaming service also launched a spin-off series called The Paper last fall. Created by Greg Daniels – who brought the US version of The Office to life – and Michael Koman, The Paper features a return appearance by Oscar Nunez as his character Oscar Martinez, linking it to the original show. However, beyond that connection, The Paper feels more like a continuation of the show’s spirit than a direct sequel.
