Final Reckoning’s Shocking Character Choice Could Ruin Mission: Impossible’s Future!
Caution: This discussion might disclose SPOILERS for Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Mission: Impossible – Fallout concludes the series on a somewhat enigmatic note, yet it introduces an unusual character decision that could potentially impact subsequent productions. The Mission: Impossible franchise is renowned as one of the top action series, having consistently pushed boundaries since its inception in 1996. Over the years, it has continuously redefined itself, presenting innovative ways for Tom Cruise to put himself in peril through some of the most awe-inspiring stunts ever captured on film. Mission: Impossible – Fallout is no exception, featuring a thrilling submarine sequence and an exhilarating biplane chase that will leave viewers gripped with anticipation.
As a movie reviewer, I must say that while this eighth installment in the franchise is supposedly its swan song, it leaves the door wide open for potential future adventures. Our beloved hero Ethan Hunt and his IMF crew call it quits, but not entirely – their bonds remain unbroken, hinting at a reunion should the world find itself in peril again. Yet, if another film is to be made, we may witness a shift in the team dynamics as Simon Pegg’s character Benji steps up to take on a more leadership-oriented role. I sincerely hope that isn’t the course the series chooses to navigate, as I believe Benji’s true strength lies elsewhere.
Benji Becomes The Leader Of The IMF In Final Reckoning (And I Don’t Like It)
Benji Steps Away From The Computer To Lead The Team
Benji has been an integral member of the IMF team since Ethan enlisted his aid during Mission: Impossible III. As a technician for the IMF, Benji transitioned to being a field agent in Ghost Protocol and solidified his position as one of Hunt’s most trusted allies across subsequent films. Known for his devotion and loyalty, Benji is also exceptionally intelligent, yet he tends to operate behind the scenes, offering guidance to Ethan from behind a computer, rather than taking on leadership roles.
In the movie “Final Reckoning,” Benji assumes a more significant position within the team due to being one of the last original IMF agents remaining. Ethan tasks him with leading the group while he searches for The Entity’s source code underwater, and also asks Benji to look after the team during his confrontation with Gabriel (Esai Morales) in the climax. Despite being an accomplished agent, Benji isn’t naturally inclined towards leadership, which detracts from what his character excels at.
Why Benji Being Team Leader Is A Problem For Final Reckoning
Benji Is Better As A Supporting Character To Ethan
In the thrilling sequel, “Final Reckoning,” I found that the team dynamic was quite different due to everyone being fresh faces. Haley Atwell’s captivating Grace joined the crew from the previous installment, “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.” Pom Klementieff’s Paris and Greg Tarzan Davis’ Theo were previously at odds with Ethan’s mission, but now they’re part of our team.
Sadly, Luther (Ving Rhames) met his end at the film’s start, leaving only Benji as a veteran member. However, Benji’s role has predominantly been about operating from the sidelines, keeping an eye on the situation and alerting Ethan when necessary.
Benji excels as a comical figure, providing uproarious responses to Ethan’s outrageous antics. Despite demonstrating some leadership traits, it’s clear that he hasn’t yet proven himself capable of leading the team amidst intense situations. However, his temporary stint as team leader in “Final Reckoning” presents some unusual scenes that don’t quite fit with his typical persona. He’s required to engage in combat, which seems odd given he’s going up against trained soldiers. He’s skilled at hacking computers or defusing bombs, but may not excel at giving orders.
Benji Leading The IMF Could Hurt A Future Mission: Impossible Movie
Mission: Impossible Wouldn’t Be Interesting With Any Leader Besides Ethan Hunt
The movie titled “Final Reckoning” is marketed as the concluding chapter of the “Mission: Impossible” series, but it may not be the end. If the film “Final Reckoning” proves successful at the box office, Paramount might consider ways to cash in on its success, such as a spinoff or follow-up. However, if the movies persist with Benji as the team leader, that’s not necessarily an exciting path for the franchise.
In these films, the cruise serves as both the essence and spirit. The fervor with which Hunt strives to save the world is matched only by Cruise’s relentless pursuit of pushing cinema boundaries through his breathtaking and perilous stunts. Despite Benji being a captivating character, Hunt stands out as the most compelling commander of the IMF. Continuing the franchise after Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning with Benji taking over from Hunt could be a misstep.
