Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, has mentioned that his next game, following his intended departure marked by the release of Fantasian: Neo Dimension, is envisioned as a spiritual successor to the cherished Final Fantasy VI – one of the most adored installments in the series.
Initially intended as his final creation, “Fantasian: Neo Dimension” turned out to be a delightful experience for Sakaguchi while collaborating with the team. He found it difficult to leave them behind, leading him to commit to another project alongside Mistwalker instead, as he shared with The Verge.
Indeed, humans do have a strong desire for more, don’t they? Consequently, I’m engaged in a fresh venture with the team that previously developed Fantasian: Neo Dimension,” Sakaguchi mentioned. “The project will likely maintain a similar aesthetic to my prior creations and serve as an effective sequel to Final Fantasy VI, aiming to deliver something both familiar yet innovative. It’s essentially the second part of my goodbye letter.
Listen up, Final Fantasy enthusiasts! Many of you might find this news melodious, as Final Fantasy VI is often hailed as a pinnacle in the series by devoted fans. It’s unique because it was the last game to use 2D sprites and visuals before the arrival of 3D graphics with Final Fantasy VII. Now, you can relive the magic of Final Fantasy VI within the Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster collection. And who knows, one day we might witness the realization of the producer’s dream for a Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake!
Back in November, Masaaki Hayasaka commented about the game “Octopath Traveler” – the first title to combine high-definition (HD) and 2D graphics. He mentioned that they drew inspiration from “Final Fantasy VI,” particularly its top-notch pixel art. It’d be fascinating to see how the game we referenced would appear using the HD-2D art style, he added. So, let’s hope for a peek at that!
