In the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” it was made clear why Erik Campbell (Richard Harmon) met his demise, even though he wasn’t directly connected to Death’s chosen lineage. The sixth film in the “Final Destination” series intensified the danger as Death focused on a specific family, systematically eliminating them because of an event that never occurred in the past, thanks to the actions of one of their kin.
The narrative revolves around Stefani Reyes, portrayed by Kaitlyn Santa Juana, who has been experiencing visions of a past catastrophe that occurred at Skyview Tower during the 1960s. It’s later unveiled that her grandmother, Iris (Brec Bassinger), was the source of these visions. After Iris passes away in the current timeline, Death starts focusing on the other family members, one of whom is Erik.
Under the direction of Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, the film titled “Final Destination: Bloodlines” boasts an impressive ensemble including Brec Bassinger, Richard Harmon, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Gabrielle Rose, Owen Joyner, Anna Lore, Alex Zahara, Rya Kihlstedt, and the late Tony Todd. The movie made its debut on May 16, 2025, and was subsequently launched on HBO Max on August 1, 2025.
Why Did Erik Die In Final Destination?

As a cinephile immersed in the intricacies of “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” I discovered an eerie pattern in Death’s plan: it follows the Campbell family’s age order, with the eldest member succumbing first, and the fate of the youngest being the last to unfold.
Following the demise of Howard Campbell (Iris’ eldest son), Erik Campbell, his eldest son, is next in line. Interestingly, Erik, who was thought to have perished inside his tattoo shop, is later discovered to be alive and thriving. In an unexpected turn of events, it’s Julia Campbell (Anna Lore), Erik’s sister, who passes away first, causing a bewilderment about the sequence of deaths within the family.
In the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” it’s made clear that Erik isn’t linked to the Campbell family genetically, as he’s not Howard’s actual child. Rather, he is the offspring of Jerry Fenbury, a man with whom Brenda, Erik’s mother, had an extra-marital relationship.

Despite Death having spared Erik, he feels assured about rescuing his brother Bobby from imminent peril. Yet, when he attempts to save Bobby by deceiving the entity into halting Bobby’s heart using his peanut allergy, an unfortunate turn of events transpires: Erik meets a gruesome demise in the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” following a catastrophic malfunction of an MRI machine within a hospital.
Some spectators ponder over the reason behind Erik’s demise, given he doesn’t belong to the Campbell lineage. After his gruesome passing, Stefani mutters under her breath, “When you meddle with death, things can get complicated,” which offers an insightful reason as to why Erik met the same fate as Bobby.
By challenging Death’s scheme to rescue Bobby, Erik effectively sealed his own unfortunate destiny. In the series, it’s made clear that Death is a shrewd power, not one easily manipulated, as this being appears to be aware when someone attempts to thwart its designs.
The Final Destination: Bloodlines Directors Explain Why Erik Died

During an interview with Polygon in May 2025, directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein expressed a similar idea when discussing why Erik met his fate. They referenced what William Bludworth (portrayed by the late Tony Todd) told the Campbells prior to Erik and Bobby’s demise in the movie:
Adam Stein: “Tony [Todd] says it: when you fuck with death, things get messy.”
Zach Lipovsky: “Indeed, that was our response to the question posed. Immediately following his demise, the opening line is ‘Why did he die?’ Kaitlyn’s character seems to echo Bludworth when she says, ‘When you meddle with death, things can get complicated.’ I believe this serves as a valuable reminder for all of us.
Essentially, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” delves into the reasons behind Erik’s initial demise and underscores Death’s unwavering rules as a reminder for the audience.
However, you might wonder why Death appeared to attempt to cause harm to Erik in his tattoo studio. Stein explained that this was due to Death’s playful nature, using an analogy where Erik is a fish and Death is the fisherman. The fisherman aims to catch Erik, but not necessarily with the intention of causing him harm.
Another interpretation could be: “Another intriguing point is, why does Death target Erik in the tattoo studio when he wasn’t supposed to be there? We’ve always found it amusing to consider that Death possesses a playful nature. Just as a fisherman may accidentally catch a fish and then release it, Death seems to be ‘fishing’ for Erik in the tattoo parlor, but without any intention of taking his life.
In the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” Death appears to operate in a more complex manner, as it seems capable of altering its plan to target individuals who were not originally intended to die, if they interfere or try to deceive Death. This underscores a cautionary message: meddling with Death carries potentially dire consequences for any character who transgresses that boundary.
