Film fans divided over whether Demi Moore's The Substance is a comedy or horror after Golden Globes submission

As a long-time fan of Demi Moore and the body horror genre, I must say that this debate over The Substance being a comedy or not has left me utterly bewildered! I’ve seen my fair share of dark, thought-provoking films, but this one seems to strike a chord in me like none other.

A fierce debate has been sparked online over the genre of Demi Moore’s new film The Substance.

The movie, described as a “satirical body horror” on Wikipedia, has been recently entered for consideration in the Best Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes.

This has divided fans of the film and led to a debate over which genre it actually is.

One person questioned, “Is labeling the best movie of this year as a comedy really accurate? After all, there’s some slapstick humor in it. But calling it a comedy?

Another wrote, ‘This movie is a lot of things, but funny isn’t one of them.’

A third disagreed, writing, ‘I don’t know why ppl are confused. This was so clearly a comedy. Dark comedy, yes, but extremely satirical in nature.’

Another moviegoer agreed, commenting, ‘Comedy can be a lot of things and doesn’t need to be up front about being a comedy.

‘Some things are just funny without telling you it’s funny.’

As per IMDb, The Substance falls into several categories, such as horror, dark humor, and drama.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but gush over the fact that Demi shines in “The Substance,” a masterpiece directed, penned, and brought to life by the brilliant French filmmaker, Coralie Fargeat. In this captivating production, Demi gracefully embodies Elisabeth Sparkle – a once-Oscar-winning powerhouse who has transformed her talents to conquer the small screen with an iconic aerobics program that’s got everyone talking!

However, when she reaches the age of 50, she is abruptly dismissed from her program. The network, under the guidance of flamboyant Dennis Quaid, desires a more youthful presenter, despite the show maintaining good viewership figures.

When Elizabeth discovers about an enigmatic substance named “The Drug” that could keep her youthful, she eagerly seizes the chance.

A mysterious entity leads to the growth of a secondary, youthful form (portrayed by Margaret Qualley) within her, which she can occupy for a span of seven days. However, she needs to retreat to her original body for a complete week’s rest before switching back and forth repeatedly.

Initially, her younger version becomes popular with the network and regains her old show. However, Elizabeth discovers that her younger self can only control her body for seven days at a time without issue, and their swaps start causing severe, disorienting effects on Elizabeth’s physical well-being.

The movie has been praised by movie enthusiasts for its revival of the body horror genre, a style initially developed by filmmakers such as David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome), Brian Yuzna (Society) and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond).

In the movie “The Substance”, Demi experiences numerous stunning bodily metamorphoses and has garnered some of the most impressive critical accolades throughout her acting career. On the other hand, Margaret has concluded an impressive series of critically-acclaimed roles, particularly in films directed by visionary filmmakers.

This movie showcases a substantial quantity of graphic violence, making it notable within the category of global collaborative productions that were screened at the Cannes Film Festival and received their Best Screenplay accolade earlier in 2021.

The violence is so intense that moviegoers have left cinemas in both Britain and the U.S., finding the level of gore to be too extreme for their viewing comfort.

Demi told Interview magazine that she was ‘moved’ when she read the movie’s script.

She felt it was ‘such a unique way to be exploring this issue of aging, of societal conditioning, of what I also see as the pressure of the male-idealized woman that we as women have bought into.’

She went on to say, “Essentially, it centers around self-harm, and I found it intriguing that it was portrayed in a tangible manner – demonstrating the damage inflicted by negative thinking, self-attack, and distortion.

She went on to say, “It’s incredibly empowering to realize that our actions towards ourselves are choices, and we always have the ability to choose differently.

‘And for those who aren’t looking for such a deep message, it’s just entertaining.’
