FFXIV Reveals Next Expansion & Release Month

The next major update for Final Fantasy 14, called Dawntrail, has been announced, almost two years after the last big addition to the game. While the game has been very popular, some players have recently expressed concerns about the quality and amount of new content, particularly following the highly praised Endwalker expansion. Player interest has also dipped somewhat since then.

As a huge FFXIV fan, I’m so excited! It looks like we won’t have to wait much longer for new content because Square Enix just announced the next big expansion! It’s called Evercold, and they revealed it at Fan Fest 2026. GamesRadar reported that it’s currently planned for a January 2027 release, though we don’t have an exact date just yet.

At Fan Fest 2026, Square Enix announced that the next major update for Final Fantasy 14, update 8.0, will take players to the Fourth, a world created by Hydaelyn. This update, titled Evercold, will begin a new storyline for the game called The Godless Realms Saga. The Fourth has been plunged into a bitter cold, forcing people to live on floating islands while the land below has become a frozen wilderness, as shown in the trailer.

The trailer shows an older woman, cloaked and hooded, sharing the tale of the Fourth Calamity with a young Au Ra. The story seems to center around a failing world, until the arrival of the Warrior of Light and their allies, who appear to be there to save it. This reveal follows the recent announcement of free gifts for Final Fantasy XIV players celebrating Fan Fest.
