FF7 Director Speaks Out On Final Fantasy 6 Remake

Square Enix’s remake of Final Fantasy 7 has been a massive undertaking in gaming over the last ten years. With the highly anticipated Part 3 on the way, fans are also wondering if the company might remake Final Fantasy 7‘s equally popular prequel, Crisis Core.

Originally launched in 1994, Final Fantasy 6 is still considered one of the greatest Japanese role-playing games ever made. Recently, fans have gotten a first look at what’s next for its updated version.

The FF7 Director Has Thoughts On a Final Fantasy 6 Remake

At Comic Fiesta 2025, YouTuber GamerBraves interviewed Naoki Hamaguchi, a director on Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. They talked about a variety of topics, including Final Fantasy 6.

In an interview with GamerBraves, the interviewer asked if the developer’s long-held desire to remake Final Fantasy VI had any impact on how they approached the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, specifically if any ideas from FF6 were used.

Hamaguchi explained that growing up, he loved the original Final Fantasy 6, and it deeply influenced him as a gamer. Now, as a game developer, that early inspiration is clearly visible in the games he creates.

He talked more about how the Final Fantasy 7 remakes were made, explaining that because the original FF7 story is already well-known, they didn’t intentionally try to make the remake’s story similar to Final Fantasy 6.

Many fans have asked me about a remake of Final Fantasy VI, but after dedicating around ten years to the Final Fantasy VII remake, and now that it’s nearing completion, I’m not sure I’m the best person to lead another remake project. I’d actually prefer to see a new developer take the reins, and I’d be happy to offer my support and guidance to them.

The two men then talked about how tastes have shifted at Square Enix. While many people still consider Final Fantasy 6 a classic, newer developers within the company generally favor Final Fantasy 13.

Hamaguchi noted that when younger players come in, they rarely mention Final Fantasy 6 anymore. Instead, they often say Final Fantasy 13 was their favorite, which makes him feel aware of how times have changed.

No official announcement of a Final Fantasy 6 remake has been made by Square Enix.
