Festive Feature #5 - Top Five Easter Eggs of 2024

As a seasoned gamer and tech enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this year has been a rollercoaster ride for video game secrets and hidden gems. From the bizarre and humorous to the enigmatic and profound, it seems that developers are going all out to surprise us with these little Easter eggs, weapons, and lore tidbits scattered throughout their games.

Take, for instance, the Ultima Egesta sword from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. As someone who has dabbled in my fair share of oddball games, I can say that the Ultima Egesta sword takes the cake (or should I say, the poo) for the most peculiar weapon I’ve ever encountered. The fact that it requires an army of ethereal egesta to craft is just icing on the cake!

On the other hand, the Stone-Sheathed Sword from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree brings a sense of nostalgia and wonder, reminding me of the ritual swords in games like Ico. Its ability to change form based on its surroundings adds an extra layer of depth to the game’s already rich world.

I find it fascinating how these seemingly insignificant details can add so much character and personality to a game, making it feel more immersive and alive. It’s like developers are whispering little secrets into our ears as we explore their digital worlds.

To top it all off, the Black Ops 6 Liberty Lane’s bowling sword is just plain hilarious! Who would have thought that a game about espionage and warfare would include a weapon forged from poo? Only in video games, my friends. Only in video games.

2024 is drawing to its close, and as the passage of time seems unyielding, we seek solace in hunting for video game hidden gems – or Easter eggs. This year, there weren’t too many, but we’ve still gathered five intriguing ones that caught our fancy. Who wouldn’t enjoy finding a fun Easter egg? Whether it’s chocolate-covered or in a video game!

2024 marks the end of our Festive Features series, but don’t worry, our Game of the Year awards are on their way, and we believe they won’t spark any debates. As we step into 2025, let’s look forward to a peaceful world, a reversal of climate change, and a beautiful scene where everyone joins hands, singing and sharing laughter in unity.

Happy New Year! Here’s to a happy and healthy 2025!

As a long-time fan of DC comics and video games, I must admit that my excitement for “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” was through the roof. Having grown up reading Batman comics and playing Arkham series games, I eagerly anticipated Rocksteady Studios’ take on this unique storyline. However, after completing the game, I was left feeling slightly underwhelmed.

The Easter eggs hidden throughout the game were a nice touch, but the one that caught my attention the most was the series of calendars found in Metropolis. The community quickly deciphered the dates, which spelled out “He Will Return.” My curiosity was piqued, and I couldn’t help but wonder who this mysterious figure could be.

At first, it appeared that Batman would make a comeback, as suggested by the last calendar found in Centennial Park. However, with no news of Batman beyond “Arkham Shadow” for Meta Quest, my hopes were dashed. Yet, even though it turned out to be a damp squib, I couldn’t help but feel that glimmer of hope and excitement at the possibility of seeing Batman return in some capacity.

As a fan who has followed Batman’s journey through various iterations, I can only hope that WB Games will do justice to this iconic character and create something truly memorable with him. It would be a shame for such an exciting prospect to go to waste, and I eagerly await any news of what the future holds for Batman in the gaming world.

As a long-time fan of both the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I was thrilled to hear that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is paying homage to one of my favorite missions in Modern Warfare – the Pripyat mission. Having spent countless hours exploring the desolate, irradiated landscapes of the original games, I can appreciate the attention to detail and love that GSC Game World has put into recreating this iconic level.

The way they’ve incorporated elements from the Modern Warfare mission, such as the table, papers, energy drink, and high-powered rifle, is a delightful touch that will surely resonate with many players who remember the original experience. I can imagine myself once again perched atop a tower block, scanning the horizon for my target, feeling the weight of the rifle in my hands and the adrenaline pumping through my veins as I take aim.

It’s moments like these that make me excited for what S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has in store, and I can’t wait to see how they continue to pay homage to the games that have come before while still offering a fresh, immersive experience. The fact that games like these can leave such a lasting impact on players, and be remembered years later, is a testament to their quality and the emotional connection they create.

Hidden Bowling Alley in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies – Liberty Lanes

Call of Duty’s Zombies mode is known for its intricate Easter eggs, and this one is no exception. It’s as secretive as any other Zombie Easter egg in the game, requiring you to find five sets of bowling shoes scattered around the exterior of the Liberty Falls map. Shoot each pair of worn-out rental shoes, and you’ll be transported to ‘Liberty Lanes’ – a covert bowling alley filled with undead cheerleaders and dancers under neon lights.

Equipped with a charged-up bowling ball, you can demonstrate your rolling prowess, earning points to compete with friends, if you’re playing in cooperative mode. However, the goal isn’t to knock down pins – instead, you aim to eliminate the creatures stumbling across the lanes, building ‘Bowling Elimination’ combos as you go. The victor is rewarded with a trophy, and you can shoot the bowling shoes in the venue to reset the lanes and start anew. It’s a blast!

In the eccentric world of ‘Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’, the ‘Ultima Egesta’ sword stands out as one of the most unusual items. Given the peculiarities that are characteristic of the ‘Like a Dragon/Yakuza’ series, this sword is undeniably bizarre. The process to acquire the revered Ultima Egesta involves gathering an abundance of ‘Ethereal Egesta’, which can be found by fishing in toilets or buying from the rare street vendor ‘Ben’s Funky Wagon’. As the description suggests, this mysterious excrement is only discovered by delving into the underbelly of society. Once you’ve collected enough pieces, you can craft the Ultima Egesta sword, a weapon that resembles a noxious turd on a stick and emits an “extraordinary aura” with the ability to poison and blind enemies, mirroring the effects of being struck by actual feces in real life (or so we presume).

The Stone-Sheathed Sword from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – This is yet another weapon you’ll find in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, but it stands out from the rest. It’s said to have originated from an ancient civilization, and its hilt has fused into a rock sheath. According to its description, it was used at altars of light and darkness. The sword’s design reminds me of the ceremonial sword from Ico. What makes this weapon special is that when you take it to different locations on the map, it transforms; it can emit beams of blinding white light or release clouds of ink like an octopus. In a game filled with mysteries and secrets, this sword seems to embody FromSoftware’s style: a piece of history hidden within enigma, a purpose shaped by light and darkness.
