Female Artists Win One in Five Grammys Last Eight Years
Over the past eight years, female musicians have been granted just about one out of every five Grammy nominations and awards, as indicated by recent findings.
According to a study done by Akas, women artists have been awarded or nominated for one out of every five Grammys throughout the past eight years.
In 94% of Grammy categories from 2017 to 2024, it was predominantly men who were nominated and received the awards, while women made up only 19% of the nominees during this period.
For the Grammy Awards given out between 2017 and 2024, more than nine times out of ten (or 94%) saw men leading the nominations, with women accounting for just 19% of those recognized in those years.
In the year 2024, three prominent artists – Taylor Swift (aged 35), Miley Cyrus (32), and Billie Eilish (23) – bagged three of the most prestigious awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. However, a review revealed that only 24% of nominees and 32% of winners in the 94 categories were female from the previous year.
2018’s Grammys analysis indicates that, surprisingly, it was a challenging year for women in music and female bands. Despite the peak of the #MeToo movement in 2018, female artists and bands received only 14% of nominations and won just 11% of awards during that year’s ceremony.
The examination revealed that numerous Grammy Award categories haven’t seen a female winner for multiple years, such as the Producer of the Year award in non-classical music.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share an interesting tidbit: Over the past eight years, some remarkable individuals have been bestowed with the prestigious gong. Among them are Pharrell Williams, a dynamic artist at the age of 51, Greg Kurstin, a seasoned professional at 55, Andrew Watt, a rising star at 35, and Finneas O’Connell, the talented younger brother of Billie Eilish, who is just 27.
Jack Antonoff, who produced Taylor Swift’s album Midnights, won the award in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Previously, Miss Swift was nominated for six awards and created a new record at the Grammys by becoming the first artist to win the Album of the Year award four times, following her victory for Midnights, her tenth studio album.
For the past eight years, there haven’t been any female solo singers or all-female bands nominated in the Metal Performance and Orchestral Performance categories.
2018 saw the popular hashtag #GrammysSoMale as women received only 13 awards out of a total of 84 Grammys given that year, highlighting a gender imbalance in the award ceremony.
Towards the end of that year, Neil Portnow, head of the Grammys, expressed his view to journalists off-stage that women should take more initiative to join and be a part of the industry.
Since, artists have called out the awards for their lack of representation.
In 2019, during her acceptance speech, Dua Lipa acknowledged Mr. Portnow by expressing her honor to be nominated among numerous outstanding female artists in the same year.
She continued: ‘I guess this year we really stepped up.’
In 2020, Nicki Minaj expressed through a tweet: “Don’t forget, the Grammys didn’t award me as the Best New Artist even when I had seven songs in the Billboard charts simultaneously and had a bigger debut week than any female rapper of the last decade. Instead, they gave it to the white artist Bon Iver.
2020 saw Teyana Taylor expressing, “It might have been clearer to simply say ‘Best Male R&B Album,’ as it seems there’s too much focus on gender in this particular category.
This year, a record high of women’s nominations was seen in 94 categories, totalling 1,101 nominations – the highest number of female nominations in the last nine years. However, despite this progress, women still represent only about 28% of all nominations, falling short of making up one third of the total nods, as indicated by the report.
The 67th Grammy Awards will take place at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Beyonce leads the pack with 11 nods for her chart-topping country music album Cowboy Carter.
Also nominated this year is Sabrina Carpenter, 25, Taylor Swift and The Beatles.
