As a seasoned film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the Venice Film Festival never fails to surprise me. Each year, it brings forth a plethora of diverse and thought-provoking films that challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.

Actors Felicity Jones and Joe Alwyn joined other celebrities in showcasing their latest movie, “The Brutalist,” during the Venice Film Festival on a sunny afternoon this past Sunday, right on the film-famous lido.

At the debut of the period piece, the 40-year-old actress radiated old-school movie elegance in a rosy, off-shoulder dress, while the 33-year-old actor was by her side.

Felicity gathered her dark hair neatly into an elegant bun, applied a bold stroke of red lipstick, and adorned her ears with sparkling diamond earrings, finishing off her stylish appearance.

Joe sported an all-black ensemble just as elegantly, consisting of a suit coordinated with a shirt and tie sharing the same dark hue.

Additionally, during the screening, the film’s main actor, Adrien Brody, attended with his companion, Georgina Chapman.

The English style designer and actress, Georgina, captivated the crowd in an intricately-beaded, deep-necked blue gown featuring sheer arm cuffs.

Earlier in the day, the duo led the star arrivals at the photocall for the film.

Felicity appeared modestly elegant upon her arrival at the red carpet, donning a stylish black-and-white belted gown paired with sleek black heels.

Felicity accessorized sparingly while wearing her sleek, low ponytailed brunette hair, and her gown without a back showed off its stylish design.

She was joined by fellow actor Joe, 33, who looked equally stylish in an all black ensemble, consisting of a black shirt and suit with boots.

Among the 21 films vying for the esteemed Golden Lion prize at the festival, “The Brutalist,” helmed by Brady Corbet, is one of the contenders.

As a devotee recounting my experience, I’d like to share insights about “The Brutalist,” a poignant narrative that unfolds the struggle of a Holocaust survivor to forge a new life in the land of America following the war.

According to Director Brady Corbet, during the festival, he stated that the movie represents the tangible expression of the traumatic events of the 20th century. The film is a tribute to the artists whose visions never came to fruition.

Drawing inspiration from Jean-Louis Cohen’s book “Architecture in Uniform”, the movie featuring Adrien Brody portraying a Hungarian architect is set to make its global debut this coming Sunday.

Over several decades, “The Brutalist” narrates the journey of László Tóth as he strives to express his artistic talents in post-war America.

In this rephrasing, Brady is portrayed by Tóth, while Felicity takes on the role of his wife, Erzsébet. The story unfolds with Brady living in near-destitution until a wealthy entrepreneur named Harrison Lee Van Buren (played by Guy Pearce) offers him a significant contract. Additionally, Joe and Alessandro Nivola appear in the production as well.

Brady said it was a character and a story he felt an ‘immediate kinship and understanding for.’

Sylvia Plachy, his mother who hails from Hungary, escaped during the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising and sought refuge to reinitiate her career as an artist and establish a new life.

Brody stated: ‘Though it’s not true-to-life, it seems incredibly authentic and genuine to me’. This helps in conveying the importance of making a character feel realistic for him.

With an interval lasting 15 minutes and shown in the grand format of 70mm, anticipation was running high as “The Brutalist” made its appearance in Venice, boasting a duration of approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes.

With sunglasses shielding his eyes, Brady spoke with emotion about the movie he had labored on for a span of seven years.

According to Corbet, this movie breaks all the rules we’ve been told not to, he further commented that discussions about running time are unnecessary. (or)

‘I’ve read great novellas, I’ve read great multi-volume masterpieces,’ Corbet said.

‘Maybe the next thing I make will be about 45 minutes, and I should be allowed to do that. … As Harmony Korine once said, cinema is stuck in the birth canal. And I agree with him.’

Last year, I had the privilege of showcasing my thought-provoking film, “Vox Lux,” at the Venice Film Festival. In this captivating production, the talented Natalie Portman portrays a pop star who, as a youngster, was a survivor of a school shooting.

He earlier premiered The Childhood of a Leader there.

Brady collaborated on the screenplay alongside his spouse, Mona Fastvold – another talented film director. Brady expressed gratitude towards the Venice Film Festival for their backing.

‘When no one was supporting these films, this festival was,’ he said. ‘It made my films possible.’
