Fede Alvarez is already toying around with ideas for an Alien: Romulus sequel

As a die-hard fan of the Alien franchise who has been through countless sleepless nights thanks to these terrifying creatures, I must say that the latest installment, Alien: Romulus, has once again sent shivers down my spine and left me craving for more. The success of this movie has only fueled my anticipation for a potential sequel, and I can’t help but wonder about the fate of Cailee Spaeny’s character Rain Carradine and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson).

2024 has been a stellar year for horror films, and the newest addition to the Alien series, titled “Alien: Romulus,” is no exception. This latest blockbuster in the popular sci-fi horror franchise earned over $100 million during its premiere weekend at box offices globally, a remarkable achievement.

With the series’ impressive performance, fans can’t help but wonder if we might see more of Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine and David Jonsson as her android brother Andy in future episodes. Could Fede Alvarez take the director’s chair again for another installment of the Alien franchise?

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the Uruguayan filmmaker and his writing partner Rodo Sayagues have shared that they are considering various concepts for a potential follow-up. It appears they’re planning to delve into the events unfolding when Rain reaches the legendary Yvaga. Will it meet her self-built expectations?

What do you think happens when or if they get to Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?” We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, ‘Oh, that sounds like a sequel.’

After the remaining characters, it seems fitting to continue their story at Yvaga in a logical sequel to Alien: Romulus. However, fans might need to be patient for several years before another Alien film is produced, assuming one gets made at all.

Alvarez shared with THR that he prefers to take some time away from his projects before revisiting them to determine if there’s genuine interest from the audience for a sequel, using the seven-year gap between “Alien” and “Aliens” as an illustration of this approach.

Alvarez took a five-year break before working on Don’t Breathe 2, which was another project he did with Sayagues. Meanwhile, another installment of Alien is expected in 2025 as part of the planned Alien: Earth prequel TV series on FX, created by Noah Hawley (of Fargo fame). It could be beneficial to hold off viewing until this new series airs to see where the franchise might head next.

Spoilers ahead for Alien: Romulus.

In a potential sequel, it seems intriguing to explore various storylines. However, one that stands out could involve the characters Rain and Andy venturing to Yvaga, a place where they might uncover that their ordeal with the Xenomorphs isn’t entirely resolved. It’s plausible that the Offspring isn’t truly deceased or perhaps an egg sac was overlooked on the ship. With numerous corpses present, it’s not inconceivable that more sinister developments could be lurking within.

However, Alvarez’s statement appears to suggest that Yvaga may not be the safe haven it is thought to be. Instead, it could potentially conceal its own hidden mysteries and difficulties.
