Fear Street: Prom Queen A Total Disaster?

The much-anticipated Netflix film “Fear Street: Prom Queen” recently premiered on May 23, 2025, adding to the list of recent horror movies. Unfortunately, this fourth movie in the “Fear Street” series has not received the favorable reviews many expected, and it has fallen short of the trilogy that had captivated genre enthusiasts and critics alike back in 2021.

Fear Street: Prom Queen

Overview: India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston star in this film. It is adapted from R.L. Stine’s novel “The Prom Queen,” which belongs to the teenage horror series “Fear Street.” The story revolves around a mysterious murderer who targets senior dance attendees at Shadyside High School in 1988. Despite its promising premise and potential references to horror classics like Carrie or Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, the film received widespread criticism from critics, resulting in a “rotten” rating of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also expressed their disappointment, as the movie garnered only a 30% score on the Popcornmeter.

Prom Queen’ has significant flaws, accumulating into a film that barely exceeds being simply below average. Katie Rife of IGN Movies commented that the movie is poorly executed and lacks the necessary fright elements, often overlooked in horror films. In essence, ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ on Netflix carries an extensive backstory, but the actual movie is a bland and unengaging Young Adult production that struggles to maintain even a minimal level of interest.

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Falters Despite a Promising Plot

A significant number of reviews share a tone similar to Stevens and Rife’s, yet there are several that assert Netflix executed the film perfectly as intended. Luna Guthrie from Collider, for instance, awarded Fear Street: Prom Queen a score of 7 out of 10. She commended the movie, stating, “It may not be pioneering new territory, but Prom Queen is a competent enough teen slasher that effectively expands the growing universe of R.L. Stine…In typical slasher fashion, Prom Queen handles the task of spreading suspicion skillfully…Like the original trilogy, the film doesn’t shy away from gore and offers an enjoyable dose of blood and special effects to its audience.
